Can't turn light off??

Has anyone else been told that we aren't allowed to turn off the register light anymore?  Before, we had to turn them off if our register would be unattended (like if we had to go to the restroom) or when it was time for us to clock out.  Now, I'm being told I have to wait until someone relieves me, but the huge problem with this is that we're so understaffed I am often stuck at the register an hour past when I should have gotten off, throwing off the schedule for the rest of my night!

Just tell them you need to leave on time unless they give you two hours notice.  You have things planned/ride waiting/etc. and can't work overtime.

Call on the voycall "go home relief on checkstand xxx please. Go home relief on checkstand xxx."
If that don't work, and it's not insanely busy, can you block off your checkstand and go clock out?

Find out who the floor supervisor or manager on duty is for your shift and tell them "sorry, I have to leave at 2:00 today, I can't stay late".  Do it every single day if you have to until they get the message.  If they give you any trouble just smile real sweet and tell them "oh, if it was up to me I would love to stay and help out, but I have to _________ after work."  Fill in the blank.
