Depends on your contract. Depends on in which context.
When eschedule came out, there was a rumor that each Department head must work atleast one late shift. I do not know if it applied to regular employees. So, at my store, the day Grocery manager, the Dairy manager and the Frozen lead work late shifts(12 noon until 830) on Tuesdays. They use that time to change out endcaps and write the schedule. I do think the Drug/GM manager also works atleast one late shift a week. It appears each person in the Meat department works one late shift a week(1130-8). I have never watched other peoples schedule trends. I think most regular employees work within their availability and get their shifts by senority.
If you are questioning late shifts, request to see it in writing. I am guessing their was an explanation on Barney Web 2-3 years ago explaining eschedule and the late shifts.. I do not think it is specifically in the contract except the manager saying that you are not doing as requested.
I think it depends on contract or division standards because here, all department heads work 1 night a week, and all backup department heads work 2 nights a week.
And personally I think department heads should.
They need to be able to work all shifts and see how it is for the night crew, and they need to be able to get to know all their employees, not just the old timers on morning shifts.
