Have you ever seen someone overqualified for the job?

I'm sure this is going to get overrun by trolls, but this is probably a strange question but have you ever seen anyone in your store that is actually overqualified for the job?

We just got a cake decorator (first time we've actually had someone be an official cake decorator, before we've just all had to pitch in on it) and this lady is seriously overqualified to be working for kroger, she's had all this experience as a pastry chef and she's working for just over minimum wage... i know she won't stay long, they've already talked about her going to a marketplace store and while she's been friendly enough to me, i have this nagging feeling that she is basically looking down on us like she's better than us. She's already let us know several times that the retail side of it is "so much more different" than what she's used to and someone she knew today asked her if she was liking the job and she just lets out this big laugh and is like 'it's.......................... interesting". She's told us all about how her husband is a chef and how she's used to working in other places, basically implying that her other jobs were more high class.

As far as i know i'm the only one feeling this way because everyone else is so excited to have someone in our department who knows what she's actually doing. I know i should be glad we finally have someone with experience because we all know the types we can get with new hires but this first impression i have is bothering me. has anyone had anything like this happen before?

Are you sure it's not your own jealousy and insecurity that's causing you not to like this woman?  It does make wonder though why she would take a job at Kroger if she is so qualified.  Is there a lack of cake decorating jobs in Dayton, Ohio?  Is she strictly a decorator or can she do other things such as baking and pastry?  What happened to the jobs she had?  Were they at restaurants that closed?  Has she been fired a lot?

I hope i'm not being jealous or insecure. it's not that i don't like her.... i'm not sure what it is to be honest. but she claims that she's worked in many places where they've baked their own goods, and has experience in baking/pastry, etc. i'm not sure about her job history as far as why she doesn't work at any of these places anymore.

it's hard to describe really. i'm giving her a chance because i know many people probably think the bakery and deli are a couple of petty departments lol.

Sugar up to her and just ask her why, with all her experience, is she working at Kroger?  Her husband is a chef so maybe he taught her at home.  Ask her where she has worked before.  Ask her where she went to culinary school.  Just be friendly and ask some questions to draw her out.

We had a lady start out as a cashier at my Kroger.  It came time to promote someone to the cash office and it was my turn so I said yes.  All hell broke loose because this new lady and the comanager were besties.  I got so sick and tired of hearing from the comanager "lady has 15 years banking experience, blah blah blah.  So I asked real friendly what banks she had worked for.  This lady just mumbled something and ran off.  Liar.

Hi, i'm one of the trolls here.......but on this one I'm gonna be good and respond respectfully to your very valid post.

Yes. I have experienced people who were way over qualified-----but we're in this brave new world where decades of experience and even advanced college degrees don't mean squat. And i know this from experience, as I have both.

As for your claims of this person appearing as haughty and arrogant and full of herself......seen that too. Retail is full of this exact model. Generally what happens is, if they stick around long enough, that attitude kinda gets 'trained' out of them :)

Good post, 4hour

No, that was in the olden days when God only had to kids.  He doesn't ever get rest now or any days off.  Especially with Hillary heading to the pokey lol!

I work in a bakery with a pastry chef and i feel similarly to the poster. The lady always talks  of her past experiences at professional work, so why in God's name would she want to give it all up for hourly wages? She even ran a company apparently. Doesn't make sense. At all. The way i look at it, she's no better and no worse than the rest of us. We all clock in, wear hair nets and name tags. But at our store,  she does kinda act like she's better, rewriting her schedule so she never closes or works weekends. And she's snitches on people rather than trying to discuss issues too. I hate that crap. My hope is that I'll get to be there the day she finds out she's losing her job bc they're phasing  out chefs.

We're twins! She did the same thing, where she was allowed to rewrite her own schedule, come in whenever she pleased (even on her days off) She ran to the HR person about literally every little thing, and complained to me when a coworker simply asked if she had scanned a cake out before throwing it away, going on about how "she's tired of being told what to do" and that "she's always been in management". Well, guess what, you aren't in management now!!! In the end though she's not even here anymore.
