Like, literally, evil. At least that's what a highly upset elderly lady told me (and to my absolute delight, our store manager!). Apparently having a chip/EMV on your payment card is the mark of the beast, and she'd "rather starve" (also, she forgot her checkbook).

I just don't see what all the fuss is about. You either punch in a 4 to 6 digit pin#, or you fumble around trying to find that fake pen, then sign which is really about the same amount of "hassle".
I would just smile and tell the customers "you should call the 800# on the back of your card and talk to the bank about it".
If you instruct the customer to insert and remove their chip about 3 or 4 times it will allow them to slide instead and then have them hit the enter button, for credit.
This is the trick I've been using.
