Out of control cereal aisle backstock
Permalink

I'm about 5 weeks into grocery so relatively new. Beginning this week my manager showed me how to scan backstock and edit stuff like bohs, mins, and allocations in cao. This Sunday on backstock day I went through and thoroughly scanned everything that I have noticed being a problem for backstock in hopes of getting it under control. Problem is other than 1 or 2 recent resets 99% of everything looks good on cao. Couple examples of stuff that keeps showing up is kroger bag cereals and stuff like way too much jif peanut butter or sometimes different jellies. I know for certain my DM  isn't ordering it, it seems like the computer just randomly ordering crap. I have a U boat stacked 6 feet high of backstock and now I'm starting to have to put stuff on a pallet because I just can't fit anymore. DM says eventually he wants everyone ordering the aisle they regularly work because we know them best so maybe this will help.

I was told by our backup that the cereal aisle is one of the hardest to keep under control. Anyone else have that experience? I'd really like to get my backstock down to mostly sale items or fast movers but it seems like it just gets worse every day.

How do you scan backstock?  Do you go to residual scan?

What state are you in?  It sounds like you are using CAO a revision before the one I use.

I am not able to change the Min when I scan residual backstock.  I can only change it in order review.  I am able to change Alloc and BOH in Residual scan.

I scan in residual but double check mins in order review if alloc and boh is correct and a buttload keeps coming in.

Not sure how your aisle is set up.  Most stores are Cereal, Oatmeal, pop tarts, granola bars, pancake mix, syrups, P, B &  J, pudding packs, Juice boxes.

Not sure how many U boats you have access to.  We had 3 for that aisle.  1 for cereal, 1 for juice boxes, PB&J and pancake mixes.  The other for everything else.

If you run backstock often, it is an easy aisle.  Just, we don't always have time.  Learn to look at the order on the computer ahead of time.  It might be easier to look at it in Order Detail instead of Order Processing.  The aisle products are close together in the list on the screen.

You can change cases ordered to 1 in the computer before Order Review is started.  After the Order review is Processed and redirects are done, you can go back on the computer and change the cases ordered to 0 if you wanted to.

When you are ordering, use F6 to see the info that you saw on the computer.  We order everyday.  We un receive the order that we are working on when we are doing an order for the next truck.  It is not for a novice.  Your department manager will understand that we do that so we don't have to Control O everything.

For the peanut butter, I would triple check the Alloc and set the minimum 12 lower until it stops coming in too often.  Jiff is a very good seller here.

I do not trust many of my workers with ordering.  I have one stoner that has changed many BOHs and I am undoing most of the changes he has made.  He is not allowed to use the handheld unless I am present.  I have one person run and order the cereal aisle.  She has the aisle looking good and very little back stock.  When she is off, I walk thru the aisle and only order things that are super low.  I wish all my workers had her perception about back stock and ordering.  I have an old timer order the pasta and condiment aisles.  I order the rest of the store every night.

 General guideline:

 CAO means Computer Assisted Ordering.

Allocation is the number of a product that will properly fit on the shelf.

Pak is how many are in a case.

BOH is the Balance on Hand.

(Escape one time will get you out of the following screens)

Function 3 will show the sales history for the last month.

F3, then F7 will show a few weeks further back.

Control O will show when the case was received.

Suggested is what CAO thinks we need.

Accepted is what we agreed to let come in.

Received is how many the warehouse sent.

If there is a "*" below Rec, do not change the BOH until the order has been received.

F 0 will show what changes have been made on the BOH.

F0, then F9 will show who made the change in last 30 days.

A person in the store will be "xx12345"

      A shipper will be 12345

A store transfer will be E40

Always check to make sure Allocation is correct. Use arrow down key to get to Allocation field. Do not trust the Allocation to always be correct.

Only change BOHs up. Some items are consistently lost in back room and appear a few weeks later. I will change BOHs down when I am ordering and am almost certain the product is not in the building.

      CAO FUNCTION KEYS

F1 Help with F keys index.

F2 Open data field when you want to change BOH or Min or add to an order.

 F3 Order History.

 F4 ?

F5 Closes the data field after you have made changes.

F6 When the order is open, it shows most of the info you saw on the computer when looking at the order.

F7 After you press F3, you only see the sales history for the last 30 says. F7 will go back a few more weeks. Same if you are on the info screen.  Press

F7 and it will show you the different trailers attached to that barcode.

F8 Undoes what F7 did above.

F9 Shows a lot of data. I normally use the MDS number to adjust my minimum when I had control of it. Minimum daily supply. We have a truck every day so 1 is a reasonable number for the MDS #. When you adjust your Min, the MDS# changes up or down.

Control O shows the order history for the last 30 days.

Control T, Control T, 2 will print a label.

we have 2 carts for the cereal aisle and they do fill up quickly because of the larger boxes, but I think if you can get caught up on your BOH, mins, alloc, etc. you should be able to look at the movement and zero off anything that you won't need from the orders.  We get trucks 7 days a week, so it's pretty easy to ask yourself "do we have enough on the shelf to hold us over until the next truck if I take this off the order?"  You might factor in things like:  senior day, holidays, is the item on sale, etc. to help you make the decision on what you should or shouldn't cut.

Similarly it sounds like you could benefit from some lessons on condensing backstock.
