Clocking in early? (And in late, out early, out late)

I normally clock in right on time, (and I know the rule about 7 mins before / after the shift beginning / end), but, does it negatively affect me in any way to clock in a minute or two (or 5?) early? How about late? (although I'm sure clocking in late doesn't look good) also, how about clocking out early/late? Does doing either of those things affect me in any way either?

I like to clock out a minute or two early because I'm imagining it looks good on the computer, is this bad?

thank you!!

I usually clock in anywhere from 5-7 minutes early. Rarely do I clock in right on the dot, and more rarely, I clock in late. You can clock in 7 minutes early, but it doesn't mean you can clock out 7 minutes early either. It's an unwritten rule.

Usually, if I click in 5-7 minutes early, sometimes I'll clock out 2-5 minutes early. Nobody has ever said anything to me, but don't make it a habit because if your time punches ever get run by HR or management, they'd bust your routine.

I clock in about a minute before my shift starts and clock out a minute before right on the dot. My front end manager got on me for clocking out a minute early. It was 2:59 when I clocked out. I walk back to get my stuff and ready to leave she calls me and gets on me about it. No one else up there cares when I do. I always use to clock out 5 mins early when my old front end backup manager was there. She'd let me leave 5 mins early. I try to clock out right on the dot when the FE manager is there as she gets on me about it. It's hard to get out of there on time when you're bagging a big order.

They're not going to examine your punches that closely.  The main thing they look for is people who try to sneak in 15 minutes of overtime.  Also, if you clock in 7 minutes early, that doesn't mean you can clock out another 7 minutes early.  You'll lose 15 minutes of pay.  For example if you clock in at 12:53, that doesn't mean you can clock out at 5:46 and expect to be paid for 6 hours.  I tried it one time.  The clock rounds your start and end times to the nearest quarter hour.  So if you clock in at 12:53, the timeclock counts it as 1:00.  Lunches and breaks are different.  Those are counted down to the minute.  So don't clock out at 7 minutes till the hour and expect to get an extra 7 minutes for lunch.

Hah! The stores and division / company I'm under, all company wide Kronos clocks are punch / time restricted for hourly employees with the exception of store management level. And they don't even use them, so why bother.

This means we aren't allowed to clock early as the clock will reject your badge / ID number and your punch, so we clock in when our shift starts, not a minute earlier. However, we get a five-minute grace period that we do not get penalized for on punch in and breaks. So if your shift starts at 3pm, as long as you are clocked by 3:05, you are good. A minute over, however, will result in the clock to "red flag" your punch in the computer and you can be written up for it. Same for breaks, we can take up to 20 minutes, but no more or again, red flagged.

The clock will let you out early (if supervisor grants permission, as I've been able to leave a few early if there was nothing else that needed to be done and it was slow) and will let us in on our days off. (helpful if someone gets called in on a day off normally so there's no futzing with Kronos / need to override the clock.

If I clock out late, I usually will have an explanation and will let the MOD know why before leaving so Store Director or SOM knows why when verifying my card for payroll. As long as we work with management and explain ourselves, along with sometimes supervisor explaining, we are good and they don't say a word.

Nice thing is if we are on break, we cannot be called, even by Store Director (unless of course if there's some emergency notwithstanding that will impact us as employees or customers, then we are expected to respond)

I'm glad I don't work in that division.  Ours will say, "Early in punch" if we try to punch in more than 7 minutes early or "Ring Restricted"  if we're not actually to schedule to work that day but they still record the punch.  We just write on the time clock corrections sheet why we punched at that time.    Payroll then comes around a couple times a day and gathers the sheets and enters the corrections into the computer.

Our breaks are paid time.  Lunches are unpaid time.  Breaks are 15 minutes (or 22 minutes if you count the 7 minute grace period).  Once you hit the 23 minute mark, it changes from a paid break to an unpaid lunch.

Oh its not just my division, its company-wide like I said (spanning three states). (Work in a different company owned by Krog.) Breaks are paid time as well, as we do not do lunches here, as the Compnay does not believe in not paying us for the time we are there. Minors excluded because labor laws. 5 minute grace period is nice

Store by store basis. I usually clock in 3-5 minutes late and nobody cares. I don't get in a hurry to get there, but I'm usually one of the last ones gone so it levels out.

Couldn't tell you the last time I clocked in early. Months ago.
