Can a 2 week notice be denied?

I put in my 2 week notice, but was told I can't leave. My last day would have been December 26th.

It may have been denied due to the holidays? Or its also possible because I work in deli, and 4 other people in the department also put in their 2 week around the same time? Leaving the department with the manager, backup manager, and one other employee. But we all have to quit because of school or other reasons

What do we do?

Anybody can quit at any time, with or without a notice. Putting in 2 weeks notice is a nice, courteous, way to leave. This way you can't be marked as "do not rehire", at least not for this reason. 2 weeks notice can not be denied. You did your part, that's all you need to do. Just make sure you give it to more people than one, so they can't lie about it and say you didn't turn it in.

Maybe they should think about why all those people are quitting and change the way they treat their employees.

Well, I'm leaving because of school.

Someone else left 2 weeks ago, and all of us got more hours. I need LESS hours, because of college.

I know that when some of the other people that are leaving (some found new, higher paying jobs, others for school also) we will get even more hours. That's why I'm quitting, because I need to focus on school. It's not the managers.

My last line was just a side note and it applies to most of the stores, even if you say it doesn't to yours. And btw, are the managers really nice if they tell you that you can't quit? Because that's a lie. They need to use you now and perhaps discard later because you wanted to quit.

Point is, you can quit for whatever reason and the 2 weeks notice is the only thing that you need to do. You could quit even without that, but that would not be nice and it would not cover your ass. What will they do if you don't show up after the date on the notice marking your last day?

Double check with your union rep.

The holiday season is a busy time of year for Kroger. You will probably not be permitted to quit until after Super Bowl Sunday!

Quitting during the holidays is horrible timing, but that's not your fault either. You did all you need to do, just make sure the 2 week notice gets to store management.

Well, I'm quitting right AFTER Christmas, when hours usually get cut anyway, I don't see why they are so mad. Well, I guess they are mad because most of the department is gone, but still.

2 weeks is hypothetically enough time to hire new people, except Kroger's hiring process is so slow and awful it usually takes a month.

Hell, putting in two weeks notice is more than they often get, they should be happy. You held up your end of the cultural bargain. When it's your last day, it's your last day. You get to make that decision, not them.

There will always be a holiday. Don't let them bully you.
