UNION ARREARS and more questions.

On my last two paychecks there is a deduction called "UNION ARREARS." I already paid my union initiation fee of $25 (I'm 15 so it's lower than most.) My regular union dues are $8.44. I heard some people say that if you have a vacation week then they take out money of your next paycheck. However I was not on vacation but there was a week when i did not work at all. The week of 12/25-12/31 i did not work because the 25th was xmas and i requested the 31 off for a wedding that I was in. I could have been scheduled the week but they declined. The other days I was not scheduled. I did not agree to have this money taken out. On both weeks there is a $5 deduction for a total of $10. Can someone explain what the hell is going on??? $5 is a lot for someone making $7.25 an hour after taxes and union dues. In fact it's over $20 dollars. Also my store is getting a remodel and when they're done i will be 16, our store is supposed to get a Starbucks where the liquor store is (the liquor store will be being moved to the back). How would I go about working at the Starbucks which i assume will be a Kroger owned franchised.

If you didn't work one week, then the union couldn't take anything out of that check, so they take two payments out of the next check, or at least that is how it works with the health insurance, may be different with union dues

Union doesn't need your ok to take out arrears at anytime. They can and will do so without your approval if need be. However, if too much is taken out EXTREMELY rare) they will put it back and your check will be larger than normal.

Arrears are a fancy way of union "screw ups." As in they didn't take enough out of one check, so they take out of the next check to cover their mistake.

That's the only way I can think arrears work. They accidently mess up, and you pay for their error.

Reviving this (maybe?)

My union dues have always been 9.65 per paycheck, and I've already paid all of my initiation fee. The last two paychecks I've had $5 arrears taken out and there's no other explanation. I'm not sure how it could be a case of them not "taking enough out" when it's been consistent the entire time I've worked at my store.

Unions every where have been collecting our $$ for the democratic party.

I don't care which party it is----that's bullsht and is supposed to be illegal.

I'll have to talk to one of my managers then, because I marked NO on the political donations portion of my form.

This is a normal union fee for new members. It basically gives the company the money to buy your aprons and shirts. It's free but it's also not.

You can write off union dues and fees on your taxes. I get 3/4 back every tax season. No you do not need to itemize it. In every tax program they ask you if you have any union dues and that's where you fill it in.

I'm still going to call my union and check on it Tuesday, once Memorial Day is over with. I want to get an explanation from them directly, since my store manager had no idea why it was being removed.

Normally I wouldn't have an issue with it, but I've been getting severely shafted on hours. When I only get 2 shifts a week, that $5 adds up quick. Plus the prices at our store just went up cause of this inflation BS. It's frustrating not knowing why I'm getting the short end of the stick here.
