Kroger Creating Safe Space
Permalink

My store is creating a "safe space" for employees who can't handle other employees opinions. They are setting the break-room aside for 2 hours a day where employees can go for a few minutes at a time if they feel they need to "get away" from the harshness of store environment. This was brought about by an employee who was stocking in day grocery out on the floor when another employee told him he may want to move a little faster so our manager doesn't get upset. The guy stocking said it really made him feel "less than" and really bothered him to the point he had to step away for a moment. The stocker said it wasn't right that other employees are allowed to say things that are insensitive and that he needs an area where he can be criticism free. Because the employee made an official complaint about this they have now made him employee of the month and put his picture on the foyer wall right when you walk in. I also heard they gave him a raise for bringing to light bullying in the workplace. Keep in mind the employee is new and the guy who said this to him only said that so he wouldn't get in trouble because he knows how our manager is. He was trying to be nice. The worse part is the guy laughed and said he appreciated it to his face and turned around and did this. Now I'm not sure if my friend will have his job.

Sounds like some crap on a cracker big time to me. Is there no way your friend can explain what happened to the union rep about what he was trying to do, in regards to looking out for a fellow co-worker? As I don't really see why he should lose his job for saying something like that. Cause if that was the case, and if I were the type of employee like the other guy. There would be tons of folks that would be up for losing their job. But hell even I know my ass is slow most days and just use what they say as a reminder to kick it into gear.

As an aside to all of this though, I do think they need an employee of the month every once in a while for legit things that people do and rotate it throughout the depts. And sometimes, even allow for a mini decompression moment for some peeps. Cause although I don't agree with what your store's employee of the month did there. I have heard and seen one of my store's own back up decorators just about get into it with a customer and even our DH, cause he got on that last nerve. And he said he told her if she doesn't change her attitude she can just leave. But he fails to realize too that even as a back up he ask her to do like 20 different things at a time, and yet never schedules her early enough to get half as much stuff done either.

So I think for sure she would appreciate it. And even just for folks that need a sec to re-compose themselves at times. But in no way do I think it should have been earned like how that dude did it. To say the least I think he will definitely be one to watch for in the future. And I don't mean just for good things either.

"Crap on a cracker." BIG TIME, yes indeedy.

Human Resources madness.

Sorry, kid, the world is not your safe place. Grow up and butch up. Your co-worker was doing you a favor. If you are not keeping up you are indeed "less than" those whose performance is adequate.

Believe me, I know how that feels. I've been there. It sucks, it hurts, it makes you feel unworthy. IT'S SUPPOSED TO. It's supposed to motivate you to get better, to strive, to deserve praise.

"Employee of the month"? Congrats, you've made your store worse. You've lowered its standards. You, your coworkers, and "the satisfied customers who make your paycheck possible" are all lesser for your cowardly weakness and sniveling whining.

Good grief, I hope this story is exaggerated or outright false.

This ****s fake. Kroger is shut but even they aren't ****ty enough to create a 'safe space' when working at kroger involves working with the filth of the country that thinks they are too good for Wal-Mart but aren't good enough for Costco or HEB.

Here is an update. Today at work our union rep who is really cool had to have a meeting with management about this and another union rep from who knows where and what happened is obviously the store manager was trying to get my friend fired and our union rep  was taking up for the employee as he basically did nothing and the manager completely threw our union rep under the buss about some things he has been holding back to try and paint a bad picture about him. So our rep did the same thing back and now the meeting has been postponed until next week. Our union rep told me this. We usually go out for a cig every hour or so on the back dock and talk for a few minutes. I will let everyone know what happens.
