How much trouble would I get in for this?

I was scheduled to work 3 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. the other day. But do to one of our lovely behind the counter inspections and some higher ups from corporate were coming through as well. They had us on an epic stock and re-fill the floor mission like crazy the other day. To which one of my parts of re-filling the floor was to re-stock 3 areas of those frosted sugar cookies that are on sale. Cool.

Around that time they had asked it wasn't even close to 10:30 so I was golden. Even with a few additional minutes it took to move 2 other U boat carts out of the way to get to the cookie cart.

The problem however is when I get back from stocking the lobby area, some of the damn higher ups or peeps that helped us open the new store, were having a ****ing meeting right in the damn back area where the cookies were supposed to have gone back to when I was I done with them. And I'm not talking just 3 people or so back there chatting it up. No it was like 5 or 6 in a circle going to to town with what looked like portfolios as if we don't have a damn conference room upstairs for that.

So I told our back up manager what the deal was. She sorta laughed about it for a sec and was then called into the office with the other back up and the DH to discuss whatever. Which I figured wouldn't be that long of a discussion as they are usually in there for a hot second, and I could have asked her where she would want me to put the cookie cart til the folks in the back cleared out. WRONG thing to do apparently, as she was in there for like 10 more mins or so herself.

At which point I looked down at my clock on my phone and saw it was 10:49. Again, figured I was a bit over but if I parked it over by the sinks and told her I was leaving it there temporarily no probs, right? WRONG thing to do a second time, as someone had pulled out both U boats of those damn Packzi doughnuts we still have and was blocking off the sinks and the way to the dishwasher and cake containers. Not to mention another co-worker was in the process of taking out the cardboard. So I had to wait for her to get all that out of the way and then move the doughnuts back into the freezer just so I could put the cookies by the sink area for a little while. Now mind you, I had considered just chucking them in the freezer again. But seeing as how they had been setting back in the area between one of Deli's back freezers, and one of Produce's supply areas already thawed out. I would think, they'd have bitched even more if I had put them back in the freezer, when they deliberately set them out to stay thawed out in the first place.

Anyway, longer story short. By the time I got the doughnuts(and mind you, I'm not a 90 lb weakling by any means nor am I what you would call athletically fit either, and with like freaking 15 or so boxes on these carts. I will admit it took an additional 8 or so mins to get both carts into the freezer without them tipping over and just ruining everyone's day)  back in the freezer and finally got the cookies situated by the sink, my back up manager was out of the office and asking me was I supposed to leave at 11. To which I told her no, 10:30. And she is like you might get in trouble as it's 11:07.

So after saying all of that. How much trouble do you get in for going into over time that you didn't get permission for taking?

Depends on your manager. Just explain the situation to them and see how it goes. If they are a douche and afraid of it affecting their (not) needed bonus, you may be in for a bad time. Hopefully they won't cry over 7 measly minutes. If corporate stayed out of the way and had their meeting in the conference room, you'd be able toner your work done. But they, unfortunately, decided to stay in the way and do their huddle right there.

Just explain things over and maybe your management will understand why things went the way they did.

I wouldn't worry about it. I wouldn't even talk about it to anyone.

If you get a write-up, don't sign it and grieve it.

Our baker would have pushed the carts in the middle of the meeting and told them to gtf out of the way.  But, that is her.  lol.

My managers fuss mostly about the OT, not the extra time under 8 hours.  Upper managers fuss about 15 minutes over.  Sometimes, I will be asked why so and so stayed OT.  I remind the person to clock out on time from now on.  A rational store manager will not get bent out of shape and will laugh about your predicament.

I'll have to see. I know my DH and the store manager did try and say I left out fashionably late before one time back when we had first moved into our new store. But I know that was a lie as it only took me a few mins to write on a cake for a customer and get out of there. And they didn't seem too concerned about it. More like why were you so late.

And I guess pending how the inspection went after I left might determine how everyone's mood is as well. But yea, I'll explain what went down again if I need to. Thanks.

I'm glad to hear there ARE rational managers out there. Mine are well, I would just say it depends on the day really.

Don't Sweat it! If they have a problem with the overtime/extra time, they can just have you take it off later in the week.  It is very common for a certain task or job to put you into overtime.  They cant expect you to just say, "well its time to go, let me just leave all this mess sitting around" and walk out the door.  They should understand that this happens from time to time.  If they managers really have a problem with it, they will ask you to take the time off another day that you are scheduled that week.
