work for Fred Meyer and for the life of me can't remember what the 5 S's are.... anyone know what they are? I know the 4C's and the 3 A's but can't remember the 5S's
Is it just me, or why do I feel like Kroger is progressively dumbing down everything so it seems like we are back in Kindergarden again!! I remember watching Sesame Street, and all the cute little skits pertaining to the alphabet and the numbers........ of the As and the Bs and the Cs, etc. These "3 As" and "5 S's" sound something like that.
It's all about key retailing now! When I started 5 years ago it was so laid back and less stressful.... now they are riding your ass for everything and the 5S's is a question they ask during an interview and if you don't know it they will not hire or you can't move up in positions (at least in produce at my store)
Sort: Sort out & separate that which is needed & not needed in the area.
Straighten: Arrange items that are needed so that they are ready & easy to use. Clearly identify locations for all items so that anyone can find them & return them once the task is completed.
Shine: Clean the workplace & equipment on a regular basis in order to maintain standards & identify defects.
Standardise: Revisit the first three of the 5S on a frequent basis and confirm the condition of the Gemba using standard procedures.
Sustain: Keep to the rules to maintain the standard & continue to improve every day.

Yeah, I tell everyone that they're Dodge, Duck, Dip, Dive, and Dodge. Management doesn't appreciate that very much.

While all these cutesy mnemonics are pretty infantilizing, 5S specifically comes from the Lean management fad. It's freaking everywhere.
