If I stopped being available on my days off
Permalink

I seem to always get scheduled 26 hours or less, then called in on my days off. I always go because I want the hours. I wanted to prove I'm available for the 40 hours a week that I want. It's starting to feel like they schedule me so little hours because they know I'll come in on my days off. If I stopped being available, how would they respond?

They'd probably get mad,

And they'd probably schedule you less or keep you on the same hours set up

It might not be your schedule writer only giving you 26 hours.

I have had store managers look over the schedule and trim hours.  They get graded on meeting the budgeted amount of hours they are allowed.

I just started writing my own schedules.  The program flags me and tells me that so and so is not supposed to be scheduled more than 28 hours.

My store managers allow me to call in extra people whenever I need them as long as it is not OT.  I only do it when I know I need the extra person.

Deli Clerk, I swear we share the same brain half the time. Because I too have felt and tried to do as you have been doing. And the response I get is that if they can't reach me they will call in the other chick that they know wants the time too. Or at times they will ask someone that is already working that day to stay a little longer. Heck that happened to me on Tues actually. Cause someone had called off and they wouldn't have had any one to cover for the afternoon. So my lovely 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. turned into a 11 to 7. And they still witched about the person on closing not getting everything done.

So honestly, as far as I have seen. Rather you come in for your day off or not. They aren't going to give up on still trying to call you to cover for someone else. If anything, I try and give them one day earlier in the week so I can at least get my weekends free if possible. As sometimes they usually don't try and call me in more than once a week(although they did try for twice and for sure I wasn't having it, as I couldn't get out of a really important appointment I had).

But yea, don't think they will ever totally stop calling you in on your day off though, as someone is always going to call off in the dept. and if they know you are a good worker, as you have already spoken about before on here, they are always going to keep you as their go to person to bring in.

I'm glad you explained that part of things. However, I think at my store they will call you in regardless. As they already have me and some other bakery people working on the Deli side of things to give us more hours. And although I know our back up manager says the same as you about only calling us in if they really need the extra person do to so many folks calling off at times. But sometimes I wish they would ask some of the folks they already have on there already and ask if they can extend their hours as often as they ask me all the time.

I mean, I don't mind coming in at times on my day off sometimes. But I feel like my DH or the back ups never even think to ask some of the folks that have been working there longer than I have to do half of the covering or extending of hours they ask me in the first place. And I already know one person off the top of my head that for sure could stay longer. As she is always saying she will help do X,Y, and Z. But when it's time for her to go, she just up and leaves and hasn't even done what she said she will do. Which naturally ticks off our back up manager even more.

And admittedly them never asking other people to cover or extend their hours, tends to really get to me at times. So that is all the more reason I need at least two of my days off. So I can keep some form of diplomacy about myself and focus on my own work and not start snapping at peeps left and right. I mean I'm a team player with the best of them. But you can't keep asking someone to come in, take a bunch of flack, and don't really appreciate their efforts, without folks eventually getting burnt out.

BakerChick25: Yeah I guess you have a point. I keep hearing that in about 6 months they want me to become head of another department. I'm not really sure if that is true, but I guess I can hang in there for the next 6 months and see. It is just bothersome when I look at my schedule and see a measly a++ 16 -26 hours. Then they call me in for the call offs that are scheduled the 30-40 hours I want. Spring is here and my other job is going to be calling me in to work, as well.

Hmm, do they know about you having a second job? Maybe they are trying to keep your hours low and solely on the basis of covering for someone else on your days off. So that they can possibly get the most out of you now before the second gig starts? Or for that matter, before you transition into this new Dept. Head position? All the same definitely track someone down that would for sure know what is going on. As you might be bumped up to a for sure 40 hours if they do make you a Dept. Head. I just hope it doesn't conflict with your second job though. That would definitely suck to get what you finally want on one end and have it mess things up on the other. Good luck though for sure.

They should know. I told them about it when I was hired. I explained the other job is closed for winter and will reopen in the spring. .

And yet at my store telling the back up managers and even the DH about having a second gig or you being in school seems to fall on deaf ears. I can't tell you how many times I've been going by and hearing someone go back and forth with them about their hours for the week. Most especially some of the older workers, because they try and put them on opening hours (3 a.m. to 11 a.m. or so) and many are like "I have told you, I have a second job I have to get up for each day and can only work afternoon to evening shifts when I'm here." Or even some of the college students are like "I have classes at particular times, in order for me to get my homework and stuff done. I can only work 15 hrs. So why are you trying to schedule me more when I can't be here?"

And actually that is why it makes me wonder to some extent why they don't even try and ask us sometimes if being scheduled X amount of hours or at particular times of the day is okay? Cause even if you put it in the e-schedule that you can't work between such a such a time. They totally ignore that too at times. I mean I know they are doing what they feel is best for the store and all that. But dude, I think they are hurting their own dept by not scheduling people more effectively at times. Most especially when you aren't taking into account that there is a great majority of folks that can not be available when you need them to. And I know they probably feel like everyone should work all kinds of hours so they can have everyone fairly be rotated around and so forth. But I think you have to face the reality, that if you put people on the hours they can actually be available and communicate with them about changes more often. Then they might eventually have less call offs and more people showing up for work too.

Amen! To that! An effective schedule needs to put in place. The Departments would probably run smoother and get less complaints if they made the changes to meet the employees availability. They have enough employees, just doing the schedule wrong.

And if we were ever to be so lucky. They would actually learn to stop calling US in to cover as often.

I forgot to add that another response that I've gotten to not coming in on my days off. And I'm sure they would deny it. But I've noticed I've been put on more closing shifts and if they would typically give me 3 days off a week they will cut me back down to two. And move those days to the middle of the week. Case in point, for that 40 hours I'm going to get, the only early day I have is a 11 to 7 and my days off that week are Wed. and Thurs. Which I'm not really complaining about cause I'm still amazed at seeing 40 hrs. period. But yea, at my store they do like to play those games at times and this was even before anybody was quitting.

Which I still kind of find funny. Cause I've told them before I'd love to get 40 hours as I'm willing to work. But don't be trying to be cute about taking away days off or put me on closing every night as if your teaching me a lesson about something. Just communicate with me and we don't even have to play games about anything.
