I would never go into a store and try to barter to get a discount.  What is wrong with these people?!

Does your store have this problem?

Not sure about the bartering part of things. But I know every few days or so. There is always someone that wants us to crack open something that has come in pre-packaged to either write on it or with the cupcakes mix them up so they can be half chocolate and half white. Which we can't do. Or my personal fave a couple that had come in and asked why aren't ALL the doughnuts that were marked down $1.79. And when I went out there to check and see what they were talking about. It was just a part of one of the yellow stickers had fallen off another product onto one of the boxes. And he and his wife was swearing up and down that we were cheating people and all kinds of crap. Even stormed off and was saying stuff like how we missed out on a paying customer by not having all the doughnuts be a $1.79 and all that. And it was just utter ridiculousness.

Might actually be a bit more interesting if someone were to try and attempt to barter anything. As we always get folks that are like where can I find this? And once they see it and the price they are like you are kidding me and put it back down lol. I did ask my DH once if we could do a make it right on a pie for a chick as she was going back and forth over getting one or not(and I know I had heard that we could use the stickers for such situations), and he was like nope can't do it. I guess cause it was a Private Selection pie or what. But yea not much bartering as far as I know of.

Yes, usually by people who are from a culture where bartering for goods is perfectly acceptable, and not engaging in barter will simply get you a stupidly inflated price. Same people who will check and double check and triple check the prices of each item during and right after check-out, and point out every single (perceived) mistake, "This is free now yes?". Fun.

I think we all barter at some point. Most customers know about our 'make it right' motto. If we don't have what is on sale we must do whatever we can to m'make it right. in order to make the customer happy and want to come back. If that means give them something that costs a little more for the sale price of that item, if that means give them a rain check, or give them a cheaper item for free, then that is what we must do. If the customer isn't happy with the results of their platter, our selection choice, etc but is willing to buy it for a cheaper price, then we 'Make it right' Kroger wants positive feed back from their customers, not negative. We as employees want our name shouted out by customers in a positive way.

Customers repeatedly ask for things to be marked down even if the dates are good and product is fresh.

Had a customer buy an orchid in a glass container. Said she dropped it and cut herself. I want a new orchid! Did that 3 years in a row until finally the manager caught on.
