Ok, so i dont come from a right to work state. What the heck is it? What does it mean for the union? And what happens if you decide not to pay union dues? My dad was part of a union where even the people that did not pay in got represented by the union so I guess I don't understand.
If you aren't in a right to work state, then you HAVE to be a member of the union, or else you won't be hired on. That's what happens. If you ARE in a right to work state, then it's like your dad's union was.

Nothing happens. In my state you are not required to join the union. But you still get the benefits of the union. If you are not a member and you have a dispute with management, you can't call on the union to be with you at a hearing though. I joined the union for the benefits and protection it offers.
