I don't think you can get rid of the union. if you're in a state where you don't have to join then don't, but you can't vote to take anyway someone else's right to unionize...
An important note: we often talk about "the union" as if it were some static, external, untouchable thing. A representing union that takes our dues is supposed to be ours, reachable and responsive. If your local is ignoring member contacts--not returning calls--reach out to the governing international union. If the local president is paying himself $299,000 (and paying his wife $100,000 and hiring his brother) from dues paid by people making $9.00 an hour, let's vote in someone else who'll be more responsible. Being an officer of a local is not a birthright or a family business; we have elections, so let's nominate candidates and vote for them!
I know the ufcw union needs to be more responsive to us like they used to be years ago and I have been peeved at the union a few times over thirty years but people needs to understand that if it was not for a union we would not have raises, vacations etc. At all. There is no way that Kroger would give raises, insurance etc. To us. Kroger would only give raises to their favorites that sucks up to management. You could be lied on by a coworker or a crazy customer and Kroger would fire you in a minute. People that is in a union needs to attend union meetings And listen to what your company is doing and people might change their tune about not having a union. I attended a contract meeting once and I was the only one their besides the union officials I was surprised that people did not care enough to show up and then they cannot understand why the contract sucks. If you have been with a company a long time and you are not in a union management favorites will get the earlier shifts and you will get the late shifts. Be careful what you wish for you just might get it as the old saying goes.
