I called in for the first time yesterday because I wasn't feeling good. Today family is going to be here from out of state an work called to see if I could come in. I told them 'No" for the first time in 6 months. I feel so bad, right now. I don't know why I care so much! It is bothering me, but I would probably feel even worse if I didn't spend the time with my family, who is leaving tomorrow.

Yea, totally relax and let it go. Trust me, folks that call off way more than you don't care and those that are there find some way of making do without you.
Why would you feel bad from supposedly screwing over a multi billion dollar behemoth company that's run by glorified gangsters in suits? Have fun, if I could I could load 50 million dollars from that company onto a palet, I'd walk out the back door without any shred of guilt, hell I'd pop some champagne! Stop falling victim to your judeochristian engineered cultural instincts and making Kroger your god! That's what you're subconsciously doing and it's sick, lady. I guess to you Kroger is the Father, the deli is the son, and the front end is the Holy Spirit.
I used to feel the same way, I felt bad if I couldn't help the team. But I have came to the realization, I have work ethic and try to do my best, but others don't. I have been called on my only off day to come into work, like its my responsibly to always be on call. If the shoe was on the other foot, the associate would have started laughing at me or not even respond to my phone call or VM. When I first started Kroger felt like a Family, each store had its own identity (Good and Bad), but associates took pride in their store. Today, "They don't care about me, why should I care about them"......is the mindset and its become ever more predominate.
Presidents/VP's don't come in to visit or see the associates, they come in to criticize why your not up to standards. No excuses allowed.....if you cant do it, we will find someone that can do it (Wait, no one can).

If you want to know how Kroger's upper management operates, watch "The Sopranos," and just take away the guns and murders. Same ethics and management style. They don't care about the employees or shareholders, they just do their useless OCD guidelines to make it look like they're managing when really they are just there and skimming off the top, similar to how the mafia used to skim off top of that one Vegas casino. God forbid they do any real work or think outside the box.
you're too good of a worker for this company, that's the problem! you have a strong conscience about your work, i'm the same way. i had to call in a couple weeks ago on short notice and i felt like crap for it, but you have a life outside of work as well. it's not worth it to make kroger make you feel guilty, when that company treats us like dogsh1t on a regular basis.
