Nacsisit Harassive Mentally Abusive Customer
Permalink

Last night a customer reamed me out for "arguing" with her and challenging her on a price.  As far as I'm aware all I did was show up for work, greet her, start to scan her items.  She rudely/harassively/ immediately quarreled with me about two items not showing up properly in the system.  In an abusive rude voice "She told me it was a manager special."  We are given specific instructions to only honor mangers special if they have the sticker on them to prevent "loss".  She quarreled with me some more. I tried to call the night manager as she was out of line at the moment.  To check in lue of me.  She  got more irritated that I stopped.  Anger, angrier and fuming red.  I called the night manager again.  He came up but got side tracked along the way.  I wondered over to him to get his attention.  This infuriated her as I "walked away from her".  She started screaming, rudely harassing me and quoted how frustrated she was and began quarreling with me.  She stormed passed me, brushed into/me/my shoulder and drug me along physically with her to the isle.  She pointed to the sticker on the isle and Said "There Do you believe me now in the rudest possible way."  Then stormed back to the check stand in a mad pissed off walk.  She brushed into me intentionally along the way.  I  came back, price corrected it.  She still quarreled with me when I scanned it again and it came up full price.  Took it off and scanned it at the correct price.  She made a few ruder than rude comments to her daughter.  I started hastily checking her items.  She thought I was throwing them when all I was doing was speeding up.  Not one of her items was more than a fraction of an inch off the belt.  The belt is broken so it is always on.  She got pissed that her items were building up.  She slammed her hands down on the counter and rudely scolded me not to throw her items.  At that point I told her I was no longer going to assist her for my safety.  Which I doubt she heard.  She got pissed when I went to find another cashier.  Found no one in 30 seconds so I traded spots with the self check individual.  This pissed her off even more.  She was beyond fuming and beyond civilized mannerism beyond talking to in a proper setting.  To make it worse she would not leave the store and hid in the shadows as if afraid of me.  Not realizing her anger was in charge of the situation and her narcissist behavioral pattern.  She requested the fourth manager escort me off premises "i.e. fire me."  He wouldn't do that.  She made some racist comments towards him as well, then made some "white girl" trash comments about me.  At this point she is violating my safety, my dshsh rights, my americans with disabilities act rights.  She is a rude, mean, nasty lady and tried to wrongfully get me fired for her behavioral issues towards me.  All I did was show up, greet her and scan an item and enact company protocol.

Advice?

The managers are just going to kiss her ass from check to shining check and I already got a locked door conversation.  I already provided them a note that requested union representation.  I was so upset from this ordeal I had severe anxiety attacks the next day, was so nervous to show up at work the next shift and my mind is under mental distress from the whole ordeal.  I am going to give the union a call.  What else should I do?

She DRUG you? As in, she put her HANDS ON YOU without your consent, to force you to go somewhere you didn't want to go?

Oh f**k that! I would've kept walking to the manager, and would not have done sh** for her!

What was said to you in this locked door conversation? Did you tell them she was belligerent the whole time and put her hands on you?

I would go to the store manager and tell him (or her) that this customer is intimidating and abusive and you feel threatened and you will refuse to check her out.

what a horrible person. i really feel bad for what happened to you. nobody should have to take that kind of abuse from a psychopath. oh, and if you touch me in any way, shape, or form when you're belligerent, i'm going to chalk that up to physical assault and intimidation. anyone who works in the front end deserves a medal imo just from all the customer's sh*t they take on a daily basis.

Contact your union rep see if you can file a grievance. When situations escalate management is supposed to step in, you shouldn't have gone through that. I have ha customers scream at me, make racist comments try to get physical with me. This is one aspect I hate about Kroger, letting customers be abusive. Ubhope your union rep rips them. A new one. Managemnt should have and could have escorted her out of the store.  But Kroger management is trash.

She shouldn't have out her hands on you. But if she's one of those crabby customers I would've given her what she wanted and get her ass out the door.

Not me. It's like the song says "you can't always get what you want."

I'd just let her bitch. But if she lay hands on me, well...i wouldn't flat out deck her, but she'd be restrained. It wouldn't harm her in anyway, but she'd probably say I best the he'll out of her.

At my store, a custy assualts an employee, you as a customer have the same done to you by a police officer righty quick. And then you're banned and also arrested. Nice job dumbass, you just "earned" that "free meal" in jail.

If she had touched me, I would of flat out loudly told her "back away from me now! I will not ask you again!" before I locked her arms into an arm-bar and restrained her. But I would shove her away from me gently and get distance from her, and if she approached me again, welp self defense, plain and simple.

I disagree with everybody else. You should have called the police. I've seen police called on customers for simply throwing their carts full of unpaid groceries into walls when lanes weren't moving fast or self checkout was glitching.

You shouldn't tolerate physical abuse from a customer simply because they think they're better than you for working at Kroger.

Day management kissed her check from check to shinning check.  I told management about the whole ordeal and handed them an anti customer harassment free zone note (hand written) and by their "laws" if it's in writing they now have to follow it.  I asked about calling 911 and they said it was a bit of a grey zone... (Bull ****!).  I told them I had to hide int he break room for 45 minutes before she would leave before I could return to work safety.  I told them I went home crying, had panic attacks the next day (day off) and I am no afraid to work.  Management is giving me authorization to deny her service and call 911 if she gets disorder with me.  (I am using police code numbers to call them upfront.  Hopefully she is not fluent in them as one of them is for  drunk and disorderly individual.  Though I'm beginning to think that might not be the best choice.)

Retired Ralphs Store Manager here.

First. Notify the District Mgr.

Next. Notify HR

Due to the circumstances, you need to DEMAND a "Letter of Disinvite"

This basically is a letter notifying the customer that they are no longer welcome due to these experiences.

I agree with the retired Ralph's manager. Also notify your store security guard if you have one. We have several customers banned from our Kroger store for behaviour such as this. Management views it as a safety and security issue for other customers and employees in the area. Also if nothing was done it opens up the store to a lawsuit.

Managers just kissed her ass and gave her an apologetic reply and made me look like the bad guy.  Then lightly reprimanded me.  I called the union regarding the situation and requested a store transfer due to bull**hit like this frequently happening.  The managers are more apt to retain the loyalty of the customer than relying on the safety of the employee.  Both mental and physically.  I told the managers she violated my ADA rights and placed me in a hostile environment.

To make it worse she did come back in.  Did a half assed apology.  Then added on in translated words:  "You should feel sorry for me from being exhausted."

Managers gave me permission to never assist her again.  If she gets as so much within 15 feet of me I can just walk away from her.  I told them it was that or a potential law suit for a hostile environment and allowing the customer to  heavily violate my ADA rights.

If you're curious as to my disability I have Velo-Cardio-Facial Syndrome (VCFS, velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI), a mild learning disability, require repetitious environments, (recently diagnosed with) acute spinal issues.  After working 7+ years in a environment where customers can do what ever they want to us (15% of them being really bad) has recently diagnosed me with anxiety, panic attacks and retail ptsd.  All I know is the job is a good fit.  My store (821 - QFC) is not.

I would also like to add on that it takes my store 6+ months before they evict an individual.  The last peeve/crepe hitting on all the female employees didn't get kicked out until he almost made a move on a fellow coworker.
