Should customers required to pay for stuff they break?

Especially wine. It used to be that way when I was first hired in my store.

 Hmm, I'm of 2 minds about that. Part of me is like, mistakes happen as I make plenty of them myself. So would cut em some slack.

But at times there are just days you hear all kinds of crash, bam, boom. And even when you don't hear it. I'm getting customers that come up to me, when I'm returning things to another dept. because it's gotten mixed up with our stuff. And come to find out the customer has just crashed some glasses on the ground. To which, it is in a location where you can't find someone to let them know what happened(i.e. this just happened to me yesterday).

So when it happens as often as I mentioned, I would think that maybe and to some degree, the customer should pay for breaking stuff. But I don't think there is much of a way to enforce it really. Especially if you want folks to be return customers. So I don't know.
