Wait, in your division they make you find your own replacement if you call out? I thought that was supposed to be the back up manager's job. Or in my case since I'm in the bakery, the more senior employees that do it. As I've received calls from our pastry chef, even the bakers in the morning if they need me to cover for someone that called off.

That's got to be some kind of crazy to have been in physical pain and still have to struggle to try and find someone to cover for you.

And then if you get a little bit of overtime covering someone that has called out, management demands that you take the time off later in the week!

Gah, that is truly something to deal with. I mean you help them out and then they expect you to find someone to cover AND force you to take an off day? Good grief. All I can say is thankfully I haven't experienced that personally as of yet. If anything I'm one of the go to peeps TO call in already at my store. Be great though if they at least let me keep a day off sometime.

So far, I haven't called out at all this year.

Last year, I called out 5 times.

My personal "call out" criteria is : if I'm in debiliating pain or have zero control of my bowels, I don't come to work.

Prior to Kroger, I held down a job for 27 months and only called out TWICE, one of those times, I was actually in the hospital. But it was a very different job with over 50% less interaction with the gross public and their money. I think last year my immune system didn't really know what hit it and had to adjust.

As far as management reaction to my previous callouts? I've bailed them out from the get-go by working 12-20 hours more than what's on paper (I do it because I need the money, but still) plus I'm the best cashier they have in the store, and I'm never late. So needless to say, they didn't demand doctor's notes for those times.

I called in/out, because I had diarrhea, on Sunday. They told me it was a Holiday weekend and they couldn't accept my call in. I even called in 4 hours early and they couldn't accept it. They told me they needed me there. I went in and spent and half my first 4 hours in the bathroom. Others call in every week and are still employed and never get written up. That pissed me off. To answer your question 'Yes' The only other time that I called in I had to find someone to cover my shift, otherwise they were going to make me work.

It's not your responsibility to find someone to cover your shift.  It's management's.  If they threaten you with a write-up, go to the union.

Okay off topic, but this proves my earlier point about "gross public"

This old lady came in with her dog, which wasn't wearing a "service dog" harness naturally and plopped it up into the upper basket of the cart. So soggy dog anus was where people put their food...
So glad I didn't check her out. She probably would've given me moist bra money, as she sucked on each fingertip before touching the bills

Back to the topic, f**k coming into work when you've got the runs. That's an embarrassing thing to admit so few people would fabricate that just to lay out. No amount of vague threats from management would move me to come to work in that condition.

Want to know what is really embarrassing! When you're told you are being trained for the Lead position, but then you find out that you are actually the Lead trainer. There's no raise with that!!! I'll still be working for minimum wage. I'll still be at the bottom of the list. All that is saying is they want me to train people to work as hard as I do for as little as I get. No thanks! If you like the work I do then prove it to me by paying me the pay I deserve. I'm so upset right now.

MyOpinion, I don't know your background or skillset outside of deli/cooking but if they actually started you off at 7.25 or 7.40 an hour, I'd say just silently try looking for other work.

Maybe Walmart/Sam's Club Deli will start you off at 10.

Me, I get 8.45 an hour now (will get 8.60 this Thanksgiving) and I've been with Kroger 2 years, will probably start searching again in the Fall. But I'm just Front End, not Deli or Meat or anything with higher stress or demands.

I couldn't do any of that stuff for min wage. Would drive me nuts. But now you know why your coworkers supposedly suck. Zero incentive for a job well done.

Haven't done it since I've been with the company. I've gone to work with pain in my legs, a cold, even the flu. It would take actually being in the hospital for me to not come in. Part of it comes from my dad being the same way, and the other part is I know my department will look horrible since no one will fill in.

Management cannot force you to take another day off if you are filling in. If they try, call the union.

Yeah BakerChick, it is! I'll basically be doing the physical work the Lead does (scrubbing, straightening, training, etc.) but won't be doing the paper work. This tell me they know I work my ass off and do a good job, but they don't appreciate it enough to give me the title or pay I deserve. I hope they fire me soon. I won't quit, but it isn't going to hurt me if they fire me. This job is getting to be not worth the effort I put into it. I'm so pissed right now!!

Ha! that's funny.  Here you are complaining about your co-workers not doing their jobs and how you're going to be the lead and it all blows up in your face.  I hope you learned a valuable lesson here.

Dang that's evil. Take your experience and go to Wal-Mart, better yet go to Costco or whole foods.

Yep, see how Kroger treats people and why employees don't care?

Yeah, I was bragging and it did blow up in my face. That's Okay! I'm looking for another job and then putting in my notice at Kroger. You know what it is because of people like you (who have such negative attitudes), that people like me (who work our asses off) leaves Kroger. Kroger can't keep good employees because they allow the lazy ones to get by with being lazy.

You aren't wrong. But on the other hand maybe this is why people get lazy... Hard work is very rarely rewarded. You can only get stomped on so many times before you say f**k it.

Getting back to the discussion rather late. And have to say I do not blame you for going about it the way you are. Head held high and not making it a situation where they would fire you. Definitely shows who has far more class about the situation over all. And I will definitely be taking a note from your page book and keep my eyes open for other work as well. As I've already heard what a "great" closer I am, but likely only in comparison to the others that don't do as much work. Which is pretty sad really as the other peeps on closing get much more help in the earlier part of the day, than I do at times. And have to be thankful that I'm friendly with some of the Deli peeps and they come down and help me most nights. But still, I'm learning a hell of a lot about this job.
