I'm still in my probationary period (even tho that was never mentioned to me) and I had to call out today because I have food poisoning (thats finally starting to pass!). I think I talked to someone in HR, and she told me I need a doctors note. I dont have insurance, money or a way to get to a doctors office. I was also asked if anyone had gone over the absence policy with me (no one has).

What should I do? Should I just go in tomorrow without a doctors note and go upstairs and talk to one of my managers about it? Or should I just ignore it? I'm really worried about losing my job.

Talk to your union steward at the store and then talk to your immediate supervisor in your department.  The HR person isn't going to be any help. The standard policy is a doctor's note isn't required unless you're off 3 consecutive days or you have a history of calling in.  If your supervisor doesn't mind you calling in then you should be okay.

Unfortunately, during the probationary period, Kroger can literally terminate you on the spot for anything, whatsoever. It doesn't matter how small, how inconsequential. It all comes down to how understanding... or how mean... the store manager is.

What I would do in your situation is go in early tomorrow, like fifteen minutes or so, and go to the office to see if the store manager/a co-manager is there, and just explain what happened. A reasonable person would understand... but sadly, this is Kroger we're talking about.

Honestly, you should prepare yourself for the worst case scenario and that is being told you're terminated. On the upside, hey, everyone, and I do mean everyone, pays better than Kroger and you could actually get a better paying job at McDonald's nowadays.

I did text my supervisor and he seemed fine with it. Thank you

So far the managers at my store have been very kind, so yeah I'll definitely talk to one of them tomorrow if they're available.

Also, I'm making more at Kroger than I would at McDonald's

You should not need a doctor's note for a one day thing.  Per the union contract.  Contact your union rep if the managers pull you into a conversation.  Say "I demand a union rep." before they talk to you.  If you keep answering their questions you unethically waiver your wine garten rights.  The right to not answer questions without a union rep present.

We've lost employees because they couldn't afford a doctor's note.

One of my Kroger fantasies is just to go to work completely sick, and then just barf all the register and the customer.  And then do it again the next day!

This is our new "Make It Ralph" program.
