Going to college part time.

I am a cashier for Kroger, I'm in my 30s but wish to train in a different career, retail just isn't for me so I've been offered a place on a college course that will train me so I can get into the healthcare field.

The course will involve me doing evening classes Monday through Friday, at the moment I just work when I can which is a mix of morning afternoon and evenings. Is it best to speak to my manager about changing my hours? Could I ask about being a bagger too as we are short at the moment and they need more day baggers?

anyone had any experiences with going back to college? Could you work enough hours?

yes I started going part time and they worked with me pretty well.  What sucked is when I wouldn't have an actual day off because I'd work 5 days and go to school 2-3 days.  Now I've figured out kroger isn't a career so I've gone to school closer to full time and cut way back on working.  Screw em.  If I were you I'd tell them you'd work whatever days and whatever job would work best (to make them happy) but remember you're trying to get out of there so it takes a good balance.  Work what you need in order to survive.  They shouldn't give you crap, it's their fault they decided kroger was a lifelong career (it's really not)

Me too.  It really sucks.  How much it sucks depends on how many classes you take.  If you have to pay for your classes, your budget will also be distressingly tight.

The "no day off" thing is awful.  It really drains your energy, and homework helps prevent you from getting enough sleep otherwise.

I don't have enough seniority, so I had to try to balance closing shifts with an early morning class.  It didn't work and I failed it, and retook it online.  Evening classes proved more manageable.

I've had a few fellow cashiers drop to courtesy clerking just so they could take classes.  Consider it a likely Plan B.

Thanks for the replies, the course runs from next month to December is a short course but it does involve an externship after the classroom part which I'm a little nervous for just as I'm sure my hours at work will be low  I need to do 100 hours of externship as part of the course.

I'm going to speak to my manager today as just let them going I'm going to college part time and go from there, I don't mind being a bagger again as I did it before I did my cashier training. I'm willing to further my education and do well in school so I can leave Kroger and get a better job in something I want to do.
