At my store the customers are rude, theives and scammers, really stupid and backwards in everything that they do. It is a wonder how they make it in life. But the craziest thing about them is how they are into gossip about the employees. They will hear gossip about employees and even engage in gossip with other employees, or worst of all act on gossip that they hear. They hear stuff about an employee and will treat the employee badly based on what they heard. They even try to pit employees against each other if they think the employees don't like each other. It is beyond creepy. Why are they so invested in people they don't know? Definitely working in an area with lots of sociopaths and psychopaths. Are the customers at your store like this?
Well, maybe a few are, but only a tiny minority at my store. Most of the customers are relatively "normal", whatever that means. I think you are concentrating on the very worst of the worst. I am sure, if you admitted it, that you also interact with quite a few nice customers too. If you don't, there may be something wrong with you as well.
Drama unconsciously seeks drama............
May I ask where you are located, just a state, division, or region is OK.

You obviously don't know what you are talking about, and don't have much life experience. Places like the one I described exist, but people don't believe it till they see it.
The ones who bring their own bags are a PITA-they think they are better than other customers. I don't (and I slip a plastic bag surprise in one of their bags as a souvineer!) :)

Can I just say, how much I love the stories about the battle with customers who bring their own bags, lol.
I wish Kroger WOULD make everyone bring their own bags.............. Like Aldi's, which has the cheapest grocery prices of the 3: Kroger , Walmart and Aldi's.
It's not that big of a deal to BYOB if you were used to it.
Then, Kroger could pay us employees more, just from all the savings from not buying tremendous numbers of plastic bags costing them tens of thousands of dollars a week. (Not to mention, less plastic bags ending up in landfills).

Only way I'd be ok with this is if the customer had to bag the items themselves like Aldi's makes me them do. Aldi's is not that cheap. Bad customer service and off brand items is all they offer. Even some of krogers store bands are as good as the name brand.
Aldi has no Courtesy Clerks, Deli, Bakery or Fuel Center to pay so that's another reason the prices are low and the Cashier/Stockers (they do the job of BOTH) get paid more.
As for overinvested customers : the term "psychotic" is pushing it but we definitely have an overinvested customer who will praise me but then complain about other employees (my CSM included) to my face and name names, and also complain about other department workers.
Makes me uncomfortable. I'm not a supervisor nor do I man the customer service desk, so I don't know why she insists on doing that.
I'm guessing she's old, lonely, and has nothing much going on in her life.
She even got a job in our ClickList department when it was brand new, but didn't make it beyond probation because she couldn't stop flapping her gums.
Oh, we've got ONE of those, at least. She comes in at least a few times a week, apparently knows EVERYTHING about every employee, and makes it her business to know everything about every employee...I am fine with her, but it's interesting just HOW MUCH she knows...If there is gossip going on in the store, you might find out through her before you hear it from anyone else...It's almost like she is psychic or something at times with her assessment of different employees...The managers love her, too...If there is a problem about anything in the store, guaranteed she will give the managers some grief over it...You can choose to ignore her, but do so at your own peril...
Of course, if there is something wrong in the store, it's almost guaranteed that she will leave some interesting comments for everyone to read at the morning huddles we have...
I totally get you. I transferred away from my last store because a couple customers started target harassing me. If they didn't get their way oh, my do they would complain up a storm. Well my location lost a good worker because they chose the wrong side to support. they chose to honor the lying aff customer. If I am going to be tossed under the bus by a manager refusing to support his own employees; Nope! I'm gone. After the third harassment case in 6 months I had to leave for fear of my safety.
