Requesting time off, no pay?

Ok. So I requested a week off for the beginning of october in august, august 8th I believe. I have already hit my year mark back in February and used my vacation hours way earlier this year, so I specifically marked the request as all no pay and I checked the schedule today and I was only given three of the days off? The shift lead mentioned a few days ago that because I didn't mark it as a 'vacation' on the clipboard, I wouldn't get all the days. I even told her that it wouldn't be vacation hours thought maybe they would at least give me 4 or 5 days then. The way it was explained to me, you only needed to use the clipboard for vacation hours and personal days? So...is this right?

I'm honestly very upset because a coworker got a whole month off and I have seniority over him. I've been one of the only few in my department to stay for this long. I'm never late, I put a lot of hard work into my position. Am I wrong to feel a little cheated here? What can I possibly do in this situation?

Sorry if this seems like a whiny post. I hardly EVER request off but I really really need a break and was looking forward to the time off...

Hmm... a week off without pay for "no reason" is not guaranteed. The only time you get a week+ off without pay without being fired is Leave of Absence, medical, etc. But you can't just request any week off without pay as a vacation unless you talk to your DH about it first. So make sure you are on good terms with that person. There are a couple guys in my department who have taken extra "vacations" by requesting a week off without pay but only because they talk to the DH first and make sure he can adjust the schedule accordingly beforehand.

They can fire you for requesting a week off? Really???

I wouldn't think you would get fired. But more like if you haven't let someone know what is going down before hand. And it's going to be a rather justifiable reason you are taking the time off. Then you aren't going to get your request honored. As the previous poster mentioned, they would have to have enough folks available to cover those hours you are away well in advance. And it's a little more understandable if you aren't going to be in town vs. if you were but just don't want to come in.

No, they're not saying you can get fired for requesting a week+ off.

They mean that if you request an excessive amount of time off and that request is GRANTED, it probably means the Department Head wants to take the opportunity to quietly get rid of you.

That's what happened to a coworker of mine who requested 3 months off to go visit his home country.

He was an overall sucky worker, so management happily granted his request AND took him off the schedule completely.

Anyway, a request is just that : a "request'" meaning you are not entitled to it, and management can deny it.

Their reasons for denying people aren't just about seniority, it's about "needs of the business" and if any cashier, stocker, meat clerk, produce clerk etc were allowed to not come to work for an entire week (when they've already had their vacation that year) even LESS would get done.

Kind of like with Saturdays and Sundays in my departments. The lifers don't get out of those days. They are essentially mandatory for retail.

Furthermore, is your coworker an underage bagger or in Clicklist? Do you know them well enough to ask them if that month off was for LOA?

Earlier this year, I received two months off on a non-paid, personal, LOA. I gave them two weeks notice from when I wanted to leave, filled out some paper work and was good to go. Initially it was only for a month but was extended a month into it.

From my understanding, you can't just request a week off without Vacation time. you have to fill in some formal paper work because a whole bunch of players can have access to your time sheet logs and if one of them sees you haven't clocked in in over a week, they could want you fired. Request a LOA if you can.

How do you go about doing a personal non medical leave of absence? Do you have to get paperwork from management? Do you have to tell them exact details why you want the leave? Is management the one who approves or denies it, or does it go through human resources.

IF YOUR PART-TIME you can request anytime off you want.  You are not losing anything like a full-timer would if they didn't work there hours.

Hi op again, and yes I am a part timer. But I am frequently scheduled for about 35-38 hours a week. And like I mentioned before I hardly request off work. The last time I can think of was for a few days back in June. I never miss, no call ins/missed shifts to date. I was planning to use the time to go out of town and I even mentioned that on my request.

And @Lane Hardy, we're both in click list and my coworker is not underage. I don't know the exact reasoning behind his being gone for a month and I didn't feel like it was my place to pry. To make matters even better, he didn't even show up on his last day before he left and he's still got his job so Idk.
