Various FAQ about Kroger
Permalink

This is a list of many common quirks and other questions I hear people ask all the time, including myself. Let this serve as a common thread to which anyone can add to and anyone can ask as well.

Getting locked in at full time:

Getting locked in at 40 hours per week is a good thing to do if you need more hours and also so you don't cap out at the part time pay cap. For instance, with the new contract my district has just renewed, here is our new raises. Your union's contract may differ. Also, at first I thought level 2 and level 3 were based on what your job title was but I have found out that it isn't. Level 2 is part time and level 3 is full time no matter your job title. Anything above a level 3 is full time as well and anything below level 2 is also part time. At least this is true with my union contract. Also, it should be noted that your pay raises are based on your union contract. If you are not on the union, raises may not apply to you in the same way. It also should be noted that if you work in meat department, you belong to an entirely different union. This is also true for managers, if they are even on a union at all. Again, a lot of this may differ based on your district and your union. So to get an accurate answer for your situation, you need to do the research. Ask your union steward or your union representative of you UFCW Local XXXX.

Spoiler

At least in my union, to get locked in, you must work 12 weeks consecutively (in a row) getting 40+ hours each week. This means you must have at LEAST 40 hour or more per week of these 12 weeks. Any holiday pay you may get during this time will not effect your streak, however it also will not count towards your hourly count. You must get these 40+ hours not including the holiday pay hours. It also does not matter whether you get 8 hours for 5 days a week or 6 hours here, 10 hours here, etc. as long as it is 40+ each weekly period. (Sunday-Saturday) Also, you must not take a vacation during these 12 weeks or it will invalidate your streak as well. My UFCW is the Local 1000.

May also have a clause about the 40 hours can't be because you're covering someone else on vacation or leave of absence (got screwed because of this)

Yes. Thank you. Your 40 hours must be scheduled. At least the time you clock in has to be. If you are scheduled for less than 8 hours one day, Come in at the scheduled time and you can stay over to make it 8 hours and this will count.

Since they put me on Self Checkout, my schedule has been 40 hours each week for the past 3 months now. So I guess I'm considered full time? My current job step is 30. Before, when I was only a cashier, my hours were randomly anywhere between 32 to 38 hours.

As long as the time clock recorded all those 40+ hours for 12 weeks in a row, and if you are on the union, yes you should be. I would ask your union representative to make sure though.

Yep, 12 weeks in a row. Just received the paycheck for the 12th week on the 28th. And I'm in the union.

Might also have to apply for it. We gotta apply here, they don't make things like that convenient for us.

Not directly, but when I started working I was at $8.15, and now I'm at $8.25. It says I have about 200 more hours to reach the next job step.

Nice. Soon, you should make $11.20 an hour.

As far as I can tell, full time is pretty much impossible.

As soon as you get close, it means a 12 hour week in order to deny it to you.

The last time anyone in my position got full time was at least 7 years ago.  LP went on a rampage and got so many fired that as many as several remaining employees got full time by accident.

As far as I can tell, Kroger is a bad place to work if you have regular bills.  Or in general, really.

Texas. We don't get Sunday premium pay. I heard we used to before I started working there. The raises depend on what region of the union you belong to and the contract Kroger has made with them. Currently, I am making $11.45 an hour after being there nearly 4 years. Unfortunately, I am maxed out at the part time cap and the only way I can keep getting raises is if I become full time which is what I am currently working on. Because the way I see it, I've been here for 4 years and not only that, but I take my job seriously and try to improve myself every day. I don't **** off like most people do. I think I deserve to be full time and continue to advance in payment. I am not a kid who lives with his parents. I am an adult with bills and this is my lively hood. So much in fact, I am making guides on this site. I actually care about this. I don't know why I do but I do.

As soon as you get close, it means a 12 hour week in order to deny it to you.

Section 18.14a

The Employer will schedule employees, not to exceed eight (8) hours per day or forty (40) hours per week (thirty-two (32) hours in a holiday week) in accordance with their seniority, availability, and ability to perform the work and job classification, in the individual store, provided that this does not conflict with another provision of this Agreement. It is further agreed that if an employee with seniority does not feel that a schedule of hours has been correctly assigned, he must advise the store manager or assistant store manager within twenty-four (24) hours after the schedule is posted or he has no claim on such schedule of hours. Employees currently on the full-time seniority list will be scheduled forty (40) hours unless due to reduced sales, a sufficient number of forty (40) hour schedules are not available. Work schedules will not be written to prevent forty (40) hour schedules, but the needs of the business will be served.

Kroger Dallas Union Local 1000 Memorandum of Agreement August 25, 2017

Management will try to violate this.  Don't let them get away with dirty dealing.

Huh.

That's tough.  My store doesn't have employee handbooks or union contracts or anything like that handy, and the union is completely uncooperative as best as they can manage.  It's actually pretty impressive.

The problem is that it's neither in the store's interest nor in the union's interest for anyone to actually know their rights.  Then, there would assuredly be problems, and we can't have that.

Another thing to add, which I forgot was that upon getting your 12 weeks, when you are close to completion, the computer will automatically notify your managers and store manager that you are close to getting locked in, in which case, they may step in and change your schedule or tell you to cut overtime or whatever to prevent you from getting locked in. I spoke with a union guy and he said they can ask this of you but they can not tell you to do this. You cannot get in trouble or lose your job if you ignore their request and continue to work to get locked in. It is part of your contract, which you are legally protected. Don't let them trick you. If they wanna start something, demand you have a union person come and the conversation should stop there. They may try to get your union steward (fellow Kroger employee) to stand in and say that they are a valid union rep, or any Kroger employee but this is a lie. They are not the same as an actual union person and will not protect you and don't know enough to do so. GET AN ACTUAL UNION PERSON. NOT A UNION STEWARD.
