Customer wanted me to literally do the math regarding 25% off the shrimp and fish he bought
Permalink

This incident happened last week when I was working at one of the express lanes.

I scanned his groceries, and I let him know what his total was.

Then he asked me if the shrimp and fish be bought was 25% off.

So I pointed to the screen where the deduction was, and told him that yes, the shrimp and fish rung up as 25% off.

But he was not satisfied with my doing that.

He wanted me to literally do the math to show him that it is 25% off.

So I told him that 1) the cashiers are not trained to do that, and so I could not show him exactly how the shrimp and fish are in fact 25% off, and 2) the IT department programmed the discount, and so what shows up is how much it is.

But he was still not satisfied with what I told him.

He wanted me to get a manager to literally do the math to show him that it is 25% off.

So I page for a manager over the store intercom.

Of course it was busy at the time.

There was a co- manager and the ASM each on a register at this time.

The co-manager calls me, and I explain to her what the customer wants me to do.

She tells me that she cannot leave the register to help him and that the 25% deduction was taken off.

So I tell the customer that his bill is correct.

But he is still not satisfied with what I tell him.

So I page for a manager again over the store intercom.

No call from a manager.

And no manager comes over to my register.

I then tell the customer that he needs to pay for his groceries.

Meanwhile there are other customers in line waiting behind him.

He does not budge.

Then the customer behind him leaves, and I tell him "sir, a customer who was waiting behind you just left because of what you are doing."

He then says "so I cannot stand my ground and defend myself."

I say nothing.

He finally pays.

Then the ASM shows up and asks me what the customer needs.

So the customer tells the ASM the same thing he told me.

The ASM sends him to Guest Care.

Was it that hard to find 25 percent. Use your phone use the internet. Not trying to say you did anything wrong but you could have did it

My phone was not on me at that time.

For gosh sakes, is it really that hard to figure out 25% of something?  You don't need a phone or a calculator or the internet?  Use a pencil and a piece of paper.  Between the customer and the cashier, one of them should have been able to figure out the price.

This happened awhile ago but I once had a lady buy some 12 packs of soda that was on sale 4/10$. She said it didnt ring up right even though you could clearly see it did. I tried to explain it to her and she said she added it up herself and came up with a different amount. I was like okay... I went and found a calculator that prints and added it up there to show her. She said my math was wrong. I handed her the receipt back and told her it was right and to have a nice day.

There was nothing to write on at that time since the only piece of paper that was available was the receipt, and he had not paid yet.

So there was no way for me to do the math.

There was not anything else at the register to write on but the receipt paper.

What price did she think it was suppose to be?   Where I come from, 4/$10 means $2.50 a piece plus tax where applicable.  And no, I did not need a calculator to that.  I have a co-worker in the bakery department who's always amazed  how fast I can multiply prices when someone orders several packages of something and needs to know the price.  For example, someone orders five packages of dinner rolls at $2.99 a package.  I tell them the total is $14.95 simply by using the distributive property of multiplication.  5 x $2.99 = 5($3.00 - $.01) = $15.00 - $.05 = $14.95.

OP - this is the reason you still work at Kroger; you cannot do simple math.

If you read the first sentence, you will notice that I was assigned to the express lane.

Why would I hold up customers waiting in line at the express lane by doing the math for the customer when it is already calculated?

I also mentioned in my post that a customer, who was waiting behind this particular customer, left when it was obvious that he was not going to pay until someone did the math.

Why would I want to hold up customers waiting in line at the express lane by doing the math for the customer when it is already calculated?

How are you a cashier if you can't tell what 25% off a price is? Divide the price by 4 and see if that was the amount deducted. Do you count on the computer for everything?

As I already posted, there was nothing to write on so I could do the math.

So how could I even do this when there was nothing to write on?

 Do it in your head.

You seem to be forgetting the part where the customer wanted me to literally show him that the discount is correct.

I cannot literally show him that by doing the math in my head.

Hence the reason why I posted that there was nothing for me to write on so I could literally show him that the discount is correct.
