I ordered 25 cases of sweet potatoes tomorrow. We already have 10 cases in back stock and the shelves are full. At first I thought we would be able to sell through all of this, even after checking the POP projections. I ran out of sweet potatoes during Thanksgiving week so this time I bumped the order up and I think I did it way too much so we're going to be very heavy. I honestly feel very frustrated and annoyed, I should know better. Now I'll have to figure out what I'm going to do with all of these damn potatoes. Man, that was seriously dumb as hell of me.

So somehow we have to sell about 40 cases of sweet potatoes by December 26 or else we're going to have a lot of back stock and have to continue the sale. I need my dunce hat.

I'm assuming u are in a slow store? Worse case is price reduction after xmas or tell your store manager to see if other stores are short and u can give some to them

Our department does $50,000 a week. Not a very busy store or slow store either. Right in the middle.

I think other stores will be heavy on them too, but I doubt as much as I am. Hopefully we can give some away.

Damn that is pretty slow, we will prob do 50k in 2 days. Oh well better have the item then be out of it especially for the holidays u know how the customers get they think it's the end of the world or something

50k in 2 days? The produce department? That is very, very busy.

I know we won't run out but that also means we're going to be over delivered too. I usually time out my orders short so that I can easily transition over sale items but whenever holidays come around I get too fixated on not running out and end up being over delivered on the big stuff. This holiday I guess it will be sweet potatoes.

Oh I had a few apparently yesterday.

1.Didn't get a chance to clean the doughnut case during my Monday night close(got a lovely note this morning about it and even the DH told me about cleaning it out as it's getting soooo gross. But I'm not the only one that has left it unclean before.....so why you scape goating me about it?)

2. Working on truck and apparently I wasn't going fast enough for the seafood manager to stock her display cases(not my fault, frozen brought up our 3 pallets and pretty much framed the display cases, BEFORE, I even got there for my shift. But I suddenly am taking too long and blocking her way). Not like I could have gone any faster, I was working on it by myself and Frozen didn't even leave the jack on the last one. So I had to track one down after piling up all of Deli's stuff and take it down there to them. Not to mention having to run a tote of Frozen's ice cream back down to them. As apparently even THEY didn't notice their own ice cream was missing just yet.

3. My personal fave-After trying to manage to get all the holiday breads and regular breads on U boats and their right carts(new on the bottom or towards the right if I couldn't fit them all on the bottom. And the current stuff on top. Well given resident loudmouth was playing back up manager AND decorator. When she goes to put the supply order on, she takes everything down that I just put away and RE-organizes it. And says every 5 seconds ever so loudly "how her soul just aches at how cluttered things are". Like really? If it's that way, why don't the bakers ever put their OWN breads where they want them. And I don't know, back up manager, why don't you find a spot for all the over flowing back stock we have going on in the freezer. Instead of me always getting the, "just shove it somewhere" answer from our DH. That eventually lands me in the "whodunit" of screwing up the freezer role.

4. Apparently I wasn't watching the sales floor and had to be yanked off of helping bake the cookies for the day

5. I get help with holiday slack out(cause it's huge for the holiday season) and the whole time the resident loud mouth and the bossy younger chick that usually do it are having a barrel of laughs cause I mix up a few things on the slack out a couple of times(totally forgetting that I had not been down in the bakery for 2 to 3 weeks and when I usually am down there, it's like every 8th day I get scheduled a random 8 to 4 to do truck and slack out. So I'm sorry I can't keep all of how everything goes with that in my brain. When I'm not CONSISTENTLY doing it like they are).

As to your original post. I say don't feel too bad. I mean you know it was an honest over sight, and you are right. You can't always predict how things will go with the holidays. You play it safe and then you are out of product. You try and get ahead of the curve and then you have too much.

We get this a lot in the bakery at times too. Even when our back up manager swears she didn't order a bunch of stuff. The order can still be huge given things not always ordering themselves on time or coming in later. Add in holiday stuff and to say the least our freezer is looking pretty scary after a while.

But yea, hopefully you can sell enough of them and turn things around. Who knows, maybe there's enough folks out there that would prefer a HOMEmade sweet potato pie this year.

Another thing you have to remember is Thanksgiving and Christmas are different holidays (well duh) and people are going to be buying different things.  So just because people bought a lot of something for one holiday doesn't mean they'll do the same for the next.   In the bakery for Thanksgiving we sell a lot of pumpkin and some sweet potato pies and a lot of dinner rolls.  For Christmas the big sellers are party buns, rye bread (regular sliced and 2 lb. round), and ladyfingers.  Of course you can't forget those nasty fruitcakes.  I think we got in four 50 lb. shippers.  The main thing if you're in charge and work holidays year after year is to take take actual written notes on what sold, what didn't sell, what got scratched, what items were on sale, etc.  That way you can make adjustments the following year.

Dude you actually sale many of the fruitcakes? O_O I swear it's like a couple of people might pick one up at my store. But others are like, if this isn't traditional, I'm not touching something Italian or German inspired AT ALL.

This is my first year as a person in charge and also my second major holiday after Thanksgiving. I ran short on some Thanksgiving stuff and just didn't want to make the mistake this time. Waiting on a truck for OOS is a big no-no. But I'm going to see if it's possible we can give some to other stores.

As for the notes thing, I actually did take notes after Thanksgiving. But still I feel dumb as hell that I actually consciously did this.

One thing to think about if you did run out of something is when did you run out?  If it was two days before the holiday and you couldn't get anymore in until after the holiday, then you need to bump the order up considerably the next time.  On the other hand, if it late in the day on the day of the holiday, then you only need to bump it up slightly.

Are you in grocery or produce?

Ask your store manager to email other store managers in the district to see if they need any sweet potatoes.

Normally, the Store managers get on conference calls during big holidays and share what they have too much of and ask other managers for things they are short on.

I definitely recommend making a floor stack or wing or two somewhere quick.

Yah, it took almost a year to get rid of some Bruces' Yams after my store manager had another store send us 25 cases on Christmas Eve.

I can't talk about my biggest Kroger screw up. It was bad.  The only people that know about it are me and the store managers.  And, they have already forgotten because they have too many other things to focus on....

Well it seems like I might actually do okay on the sweet potatoes as long as I don't order anymore. Should be just enough for an easy sales items transition next week. I looked at the recent movement on yams and we are selling 10+ cases a day now until Christmas Eve so we might be alright. Crisis avoided.

I can only imagine. We often have folks that look like repair peeps going around our department. So kind of makes me wonder what is going on with that half the time as well. Heck, even surprised me to learn we have pest traps under the counters too. So shocked me when the pest control folks showed up talking about checking the traps. Like what the what?!?! Thankfully we haven't found anything. But does make you wonder, with how the communication goes at times, would they even tell us if they did anyway.
