I'm applying for the Overnight Grocery Head, and I need to know what the job description is.  Can anybody explain to me in thorough what the Head does?  I know they do end caps and shadow boxes for ad, but what else?

I thought the day time grcoery manager changed all the end caps for ad.

I'm not sure about that.  I've seen both daytime and night time heads do the changing.

What department do you currently work in?

If you are already an overnight grocery stocker, you will be doing everything you currently do plus an extra 8 hours of work.

So, as a Night manager, you will:

Understand and use the RF handheld proficiently.

Know how to order and edit orders.  Know how to scan Lows & Holes.  Know how to scan Residual Backstock.

Know how to read sales plan in order to set up and keep endcaps full.

Possibly need to know how to write schedule.

Know how to use power equipment.

Know, understand and be able to teach Key Retailing Best Practices.

Understand and teach 5 S. Sort, Straighten, Shine, Standardize, Sustain.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5S_(methodology)

Lead a group of people to get the overnight work done every day.

Know how to use Fast Alert.

How tasks are divided between Day and Night Crew is different from store to store.

At my store, the night crew  stocks live loads(grocery, Kmp and Nutrition only), runs backstock, orders the Grocery truck and conditions the entire center store.

Day crew orders kmp, runs blue totes, run fast mover uboats, check code dates, run bread, run chips, set up end caps, lane blockers, shadow boxes,

fill water pallets and gallons.

It's not something you just show up and learn as you go.  You have to understand half the job duties and be willing to learn the rest.

Every job in the Grocery department is both Day and Night crews responsibility to get done daily.  So, never say, "It's not my job."

If you have specific questions, ask.  There are several Department heads that might respond.

I've been a Night Manager / Assistant Department Head for over a year now. I work at a smaller store.

1. I do almost all of the ordering for the dry grocery department.
2. I do some of the ordering for frozen and commercial bakery (bread)
3. Scan lows/holes multiple times weekly, code dates here and there (though usually our DSD or Replenishment Clerk does this task)
4. Configure displays, lobby, endcaps, etc
5. Unload multiple trucks several times a week. Unload most of the grocery trucks, frozen trucks, almost all perishable trucks
6. Deal with customer service issues past 10pm when day/normal management leaves
7. One of a handful of people (including management) that actually checks fast alerts
8. Understand that you're not just responsible for the Night Crew but for the entire Grocery Department when the Department Head isn't there AND for the entire store when the Unit/ASM/MOD isn't there
9. Training new employees, helping ALL employees even those in other departments
10. Putting on your big boy panties and not breaking down when SHTF, and it does regularly

This is on top of bringing pallets to the floor, spotting non-bulk pallets in their proper spots, AND running stock with the rest of the team so that we can attempt to get the job done. Pay is decent and relief pay is great (especially when my Head is a lifer so he gets a bundle of vacation weeks yearly) but it's a challenging job and it's not for everyone. Also as of late, we've had much more paperwork to fill out with DDP, WDP, Pass The Baton, and the company is introducing even more stocking paperwork to track progress so the position is evolving into even more of an Administrative job like the Grocery Manager and less of just a stocking job, so that only puts you further behind getting everything done. But I can say I do love my job and it's rewarding when things go right, but you can't sulk when they go poorly. But I'm looking at going into management eventually so this is just a stepping stone up the path.

All of this is very accurate, though I would also add in the fact that you arent just running overnight groc, and not just the groc dept, youre also in charge of anyone there overnight and anything that goes on. Produce clerk flipping out at 2am and destroying product? Your job. Coke delivery needs recieved? Your job. Meat department didnt show up for their shift during inventory before management shows up? Your job. Nestle out of room in the freezer cooler? Your job. Front end closer down and out sick and leaving? Your job. Someone trying to force their way into the store after it closes? Your job. Customer demanding help in floral or bakery after they left? Fight breaking out between customers in an aisle? Your job.

Unless you have an overnight co.
