Our manager here told me that it's against company policy to color your hair "an unnatural color " but when I looked at the company rules and guidelines, it doesn't say anything like that, is he right or just being an ass? I have known people who worked at this store in the past that had their hair totally colored and it was never an issue, I just want to get colored highlights, norhikg extreme.
We have people on the front end with different colored hair management says nothing. But people that work in different departments, management has a fit.
I honestly have no clue, other than thinking that at my store particular people can get away with it. As I know there is a union rep/service desk worker that likely has been with the company for years now. But she has often had hot pink hair. Sure it's been platinum blonde for a while there, but she has often been wearing it pink and not during the Halloween season. And another chick that has her locker not too far from mine, whom also works on the front end, has dyed her hair about every unnatural color you can imagine and they haven't told her anything.
So I used to think, it was just a front end exception thing. Til I saw a few weeks ago, one of the former apparel peeps that transferred to Clicklist come around the corner of produce with silver grey hair. And if memory serves right, before she quit one of bakery's new-ish peeps earlier in the year had blue hair as well.
But prior to the Clicklist person and the bakery new chick and even the front end peeps. I had seen 2 people in the deli having to wear hats to cover up purple highlights for the older woman. And greenish-white hair for the younger guy that had worked chicken shop. So I don't know if they think that the dye will jump off someone's head and land in the food in the deli as opposed to other departments or what. But to be honest, I just wish they would let folks dye their hair whatever. Cause I think I'm going to start going blind seeing so many off color blonde shades some of my older co-workers are coming up with. I mean I get they want to cover the grey. But not everybody is meant to be a blonde.
P.S. I get we are representing the company and all that and need to be presentable at all times and all that. But personally I think it's kind of janky that we can't dye our hair whatever color. And yet and still the customers(old and young(seen a whole family of folks often having different unnatural hair colors), but mostly older that I've seen of late) can come in with all kinds of hair colors natural and unnatural a like. And yet we are supposed to keep a straight face and think what they are rocking is totally normal....even when they have hot orange hair and circus worthy drawn on eyebrows. Just saying.
My cake decorator has her hair colored purple right now and the policy used to be that you couldn't have unnatural colors according to management. Well, after she went and did that, they basically told her it was fine and they weren't going to enforce that anymore.
Basically as long as you're a good worker they don't care here.
This question was brought up about 3 or 4 years ago. There have been multiple employees with colored hair here (purple, green, blue, dark orangy-red) and not a thing was said. This is Louisville division.
I have never heard of this-check with your Union rep. I have shaved my hair bald (I am a female) and my store didn't say a word
I think going bald is different though than actually changing your hair color. As I've seen one of my store's managers go bald last month, a former produce person that transferred into Clicklist has also gone bald too and even I shaved my head(but wore my deli hat til my hair grew in more) as well and nobody really said anything. But, that's cause your natural hair and it's color will grow back and can still be presentable. But I think with the unnatural colors they might think that too many of the older or not native to the country customers will feel some kind of way. Like the business is unprofessional for hiring "hooligans or hoodlums" or something. But still all the more reason to break folks assumptions in my opinion. I mean there are so many people I work with that have open tattoos on display and they don't say anything about those. So why not drop the hair color thing too.
This was never an issue until this latest SM got here, none of the other SM's cared one hoot what color or style your hair was, you can tell this guy is like NO ****ing fun at all. because on the days when we are allowed to dress up (July 4, Halloween, Christmas) you can tell he wasnt happy about it, but the company allows it, so there was nothing he could do about it.
I am sure the customer demographic wont have any issues, since I have seen plenty of people with all sorts of color hair (we are close to several community colleges), we even have a few older ladies that come in who have pink, and purple hair LOL
To look stylishly trendy and youthful nowadays, it is not enough to have only modern beautiful clothes, you need a beautiful hairstyle for the image, but how to choose it?
Technically it is against the rules to color die hair. Unless it is a natural hair color and no one can even tell the difference it must be manager approved first. Same rules apply to tattoos. Gotta have some professionalism. I don't know about you but we had a gal with an ugly green die and the customers started feeling uncomfortable around her so they asked her to change it. Rules are rules. Would you want your manager to come in with butt check shorts? No. Same idea. Professionalism.
We have one girl with purple hair. She got it cut short too. Customer didnt like it and wanted the girl to change it. The girl politely declined saying that "My partner paid $150.00 for the haircut and color for my birthday recently. It would be rude to change it. And I'm not a rude person." She said this politely but the customer got PISSED. The girl was called to the office and I dont know the outcome. Usually management doesnt care, but maybe because it was the way she told a customer that the change wasnt happening.
I saw a customer last week come into our store and ask the same exact question. I think I know who you are. Do not worry I'm not one of those weirdo's. Be careful when asking around. You wouldn't want to be figured out. You should know a lot of employees check the social media sites. For example: When I write posts I try to keep them vague and make it so it's not obvious the who, what, where when.
Oh, this isn't customer service. Nor is r/krogersucks on reddit. A sh-it place where customers can bi-tch after work.
This is true. You need some sort of professionalism in the work place. This has been a genuine rule across all companies I've worked for. Not just kroger.
Most companies allow natural hair colors. Multi hair color, odd colors generally NO.
One lady game in with lime green gradient hair and the mangers told her she had to wear a head scarf. She refused. They told her change it or loose job. She quickly changed it in 48 hrs to retain employment. She tried a union grievance but failed because it was against the rules. No different than ear piercings and tattos.
Tattoos must be covered.
Ear piercing are limited to the ears. It's two for women and one for men. No more than that. I worked with someone who had like 5 tongue piercings and that was nasty. Management told her once they were set she had to take them out.
