I've been working at Fry's for a few months now, and in lieu of a switch to morning shift and going through three different departments as the store tries to figure out what to do with some kid who came back on leave of absence, how in the world are you supposed to call in sick before the store opens? I was supposed to go in at 3, and I'm not going to show up to tell them that I'm not showing up. Do I just call when the store opens?

At our store, when you are scheduled to be there extremely early (like 3 in the morning), but you are calling in sick, you have to make at least 2 or 3 phone calls. FIRST, call the store, listen to the options and PRESS 3 (for the Floral Dept).
The "there is a call waiting for Floral" message will play over the intercom. When the store is closed in the middle of the night this is supposed to be a "signal" to employees that either someone is trying to come in the store and is at the front doors (like an employee who needs to have the doors unlocked so they can clock in, or some type of delivery such as the Fresh Kitchen truck), OR it is someone trying to call in and talk to someone in charge.
Hopefully someone will answer the floral call.......you then tell them you are calling in, and want the manager on duty (in effect, the overnight grocery lead/manager) to know, and you will be calling in a few hours later to talk to a regular manager to make it more "official". Then call in after 7 AM to contact a co-manager.
There is no way this will solve all problems, but its the best we can do at our store.
I'd like to hear what the procedure is at other stores????

At my store it's not possible to call the floral department when it's closed because our store switches to the "we're closed" message. You can only call customer service, which is stupid because usually no one is in there at night.
So anyway you call and after a long time, you usually get someone. It's not a manager because there's no manager there at night. I usually ask for their name and ask them to tell the manager that I'm calling in sick when they get in. They usually say okay, but they won't (or at least they never have.) But at least you have a record that you called in. Then later on when the manager gets in, I call in and tell them "I called in earlier and spoke to __ to let them know I was calling off, but I just wanted to make sure you got the message." After that there's usually not a problem.
If night crew is good theyll answer their phones. Most wont. Most stores its the night before if lucky or when the first day person shows up which is like 4 am and thats if they answer phones.
