The new district 2 manager is literally making people quit left and right. This week alone half a dozen department heads have stepped down. He claims we are all easily replaceable and all lazy pieces of ****. Meanwhile no one is replaceable because every department is upwards to 200 hours short with no applications or hope. Recently there has been multiple posts, posted to the Kroger facebook page about the way customers have heard him talking to employees and Kroger just continues to delete the posts. I know this company treats us like garbage, but this guy is taking it to the next level. There is no way this can continue, soon there will be no one left to yell at and demean. They continue to move him around because he destroys districts and then they are forced to move in, he started in California burning bridges and hes now on his second district in Dayton/Cincy. What can be done? Corporate obviously does not care, but i believe the empty stuffed stores and customer complaints have to mean something to them and their greed. His name is Rich, anyone have any advice or intel they could offer? Because the way we are being treated isnt even mean, its just down right hate. The fact he continues to trash all Ohioans when the bulk of revenue and his bosses are from here.

There was a guy kind of like him DM In Nashville D1 and they finally moved him to another district.. but Im not sure finite because he kept running managers off or they wanted him to do the same in the new district. They may be doing covert targeting instead of open obvious corporate layoffs.
Rich Bertell is a grade-a a**hole and i'm so glad he left my district, but feel so bad for the stores that are in d2. He once caused me to get a write up because I had product out of my freezer while i was working my truck, said it had been out too long, that i shouldn't have been working truck and should have been doing what he wanted me to do at the time... like he had any idea how to work in bakery... I know at least one bakery manager who stepped down to get the f out of his district...
Kroger won't even have the guts to respond to the facebook posts (i saw one of them) because they want to keep pretending everything is fine. This company is imploding on itself and bringing in these idiots from California is going to make it happen faster.
margaret mcclure is aware of the ongoing harassment. anything he does or any customer complaints should be emailed to her directly. rich hates ohio and hates everyone in ohio, customers have begun to complain and thats why she got involved.
If your going to email, you might as well email ALL Division and Corporate Execs. If the complaint is reasonable and believable enough, it will get a lot of questions asked.
It is from my experience that DM's almost NEVER get fired or demoted. EVER. Why? Because being ad DM works for corporate, everything is fine. The ONLY way a DM MIGHT (and that's a GINORMOUS might, SLIGHT possibility of corporate THINKING about the thought of termination or demotion is if the DM in question commits an ethical crime against a HIGHER UP. More than likely, they'll just transfer him or say "No! Bad DM! Just for that we'll make you take a .$25 reduction on your bonus for one week!"
And those who stand up for themselves when the DM bullies them mysteriously, find themselves forced to "seek opportunities of employment elsewhere, or worse.
BUT now customers are even getting involved. Kroger doesnt care if we are treated like crap behind closed doors, but they dont tolerate customers being aware of how we are treated, they like to keep up the appearance of a fun and friendly work environment. Plus if this district loses anymore department heads and back ups, theyll drown, I think Rich is finding out not everyone is replaceable when no one wants to be destroyed daily.
Too bad some of those customers witnessing this aren't pulling out their phones, recording the language and yelling, and uploading to YouTube or some other very public area. It could be under heading of Kroger DM abusing workers or How Kroger gets people to quit, etc. Someplace every Kroger worker and customer experiencing this can also comment on lack of corporate response, ongoing behavior of abuse, just moved from terrorizing one area to another, etc. Only thing corporate will respond to is public shaming and threats of lawsuits.
So happy to find this thread. Rich told my department head he could run the department with 100 hours less even though we were already down 80. My manager has now wrote his step down paper so id love to see Rich come run it 120 hours down. He forgets at one time we were replaceable now there is no one who wants to work here and the skelton crews are getting smaller and smaller and the push back towards management and his actions are getting stronger and louder. Any much more of this and Kroger will have to **** down multiple more stores in this district due to staffing its time for corporate to wake up and see what is happening and see how he is destroying this district.

This DM and how corporate runs things is exactly the same way in Nashville D1 unless its changed since I left as a store manager. Its why I left. These DM cant run a store and meet the undoable expectations they want us to meet.
Does anyone wonder if corporate keeps people like this and moves them around to do exactly what he is doing? A way to get department heads and others to quit the company. I don't know if it's because they are longer term and higher paid or what the reasoning is behind it. A way for corporate to have a "hit" person and if for some reason this behavior becomes public and embarrasses company then they knew nothing about it. That's why it needs to be made public and made known corporate has known about and rewards his behavior, and ignores employee and customer complaints.

Yes DMs are used for all kinds of shady activity including creating undoable expectations for store managers to run them off.
Yeah I've been wondering, does anyone on here know of anything he did out west when he worked in his old division? He was either kicked out for wrong doings or brought here on purpose to weed people out. Just not sure which. This guy makes good money but its not like he's the division president oe anything. Why move across country just to be a DM?

He must have been highly liked, he was part of the D6 experiment. 5 of the Coordinators became DM's and the original DM became the Division VP. Unless someone have a video of him berating an associates with customer onlooking...hes not going to be touched. The "D6 experiment" was to "learn" how to run larger volume stores and also bring "new blood" into Cincy/Dayton. Their 1st directive? Don't worry about ELMS, schedule what you need.
Key Retailing was to streamline the work process and eliminate wasteful tasks, to make associates not question anything and do "follow the plan". Associate gave up trying to push back and just followed the instructions that went again most common principles. From the beginning of ELMS and Key Retailing hours have been cut with sales increasing, now the only solution is to get people more productive.

If he is as smart as he thinks he is he will perhaps get transferred up to where we only see him during walks. The new policy was to keep abuse really secret so anything obvious should be self correcting. On the other hand he may graduate to a real decision-making level.
A post from a customer on Krogers facebook page complaining about Rich mistreating an employee in front of her has been shared almost 100 times, Kroger has no choice now but to make a move.

. . . customers witnessing this aren't pulling out their phones, recording the language and yelling, and uploading to YouTube or some other very public area.
This, and associates could do the same . . . although customers are far more insulated from retaliation.
Hopefully his tone might have changed with everything going on. Hell, right now, any craziness that is reported would be handled ASAP. ALL the company need is some back PR from a bad manager.
