We got a form several days ago asking for our vacation requests and the manager had to approve it. I can't tell that far in advance what time I want off!

Welcome to the working world. All major companies require their employees to put in their vacation requests early in the year. When you're dealing with over a hundred employees in each store, you can't have everyone coming up and asking if they can go on vacation such and such week. If you're planning a trip, you usually have to make reservations months in advance. If something comes up, just use one or more of your personal days in conjunction with your days off
The pressure is on because that's how they choose to do it (needs of the business) associates are forced to plan way ahead of time to what vacation time they want. It's not well liked (including by me) but there isnt sh*t we can do about it.
My actual guess is that it's because they want to make sure they have enough coverage (HA! That NEVER happens) on busy peak days, rather than actually do the work themselves.
None of the stores I've worked at bother with vacation request forms. You just put it in e-schedule and you either get it or don't... just like any other request.

I put a line thru the term "meets the needs of the business" and initialed it. Did it last year too-manager never questioned me

Thats pretty funny cause i dont put in for my vacation until i know when i want it.

You've been lucky so far. If you try to take a week that someone else has already claimed, you won't be allowed to take that week, even if you have seniority over the other person.
I use to do that as well. Put in on only when I wanted iki t for something. As long as I used up my vacations before the end of the year.
Now that they've changed it everyone is forced to put in their vacations by a certain set time or they will be assigned their vacation(s) whether they want it at that time or not.
Automated computer system. You request what you want (if the system lets you, and it may not work) and nobody knows who denies your request. If you have a special relationship with someone in charge maybe the first request will work. It might help if you speak to HR and submit to open-ended interrogation. You will probably never be able to plan a vacation as long as you work here.
No wonder why people ignore eschedule and take their vacations. I've done so many times and will continue to do so because the system is flawed. Management doesnt mind as long as it's not a blackout week and we've got coverage
