Does seniority matter in being transferred to another department?

I currently at number 2 in seniority, directly after my department head. They transferred me over two people who had less seniority than me by 4-5 years. But they told me The union wouldnt do anything for this that it was only shift preference and not department so it wouldnt matter if I fought it. Is this true?

they are doing it because the budget calls for 3 people in our department and not 4 and somehow I got chosen to leave.

They lied to you (imagine that).  They absolutely can not transfer you to another store or department if other people in your department have less seniority than you do.  I'm sure it's in your contract.

I got the handbook I havent had a chance to go through it Again. I called our union rep already and left a message on the local 700 Facebook page. 3 people have told me so far they they cant do that. they never even asked. They just told me Im over there now. Yet besides my lead, I have more seniority than everyone in my department.

Depends on your contract.

How many of the four are part time and how many are full time?

Generally, the part timers are supposed to lose hours first if there are not enough hours in the department.

On the other hand, if the department calls for only one full timer, then one of the full timers would need to be moved.

Each store is allowed so many full time employees.  Not sure how that is divided between the different departments.

Let us know what your union rep says about it.

We are all full time, so nobody is part time. Would think even if that was the case that the less seniority people would have to leave first.

Still waiting on that phone call.

Finally got ahold of the union rep and after my explanation he asked if they gave me any reason they were moving me and they really didnt and I mentioned the seniority. He said he was going to the store today to get more information on it and see what He can figure out. He wouldnt comment on the Youre a clerk you go where we tell you to go. So I guess Ill wait to find out.

However Ive always had bad luck with these things so knowing my luck, as usual Ill be forced to go anyway regardless if I want to or not.

Seniority does matter, but they will ask the highest seniority first. I would consider this a compliment

It means they trust you can do whatever they assign you to. I habe worked in every department except meat and pharmacy. Those departments are either on a different contract or don't habe one. I like being able to work in different departments. It's job security.

It depends upon your union contract. The union will help assist in keeping most of your seniority and will try to honor an equivalent rate of pay depending upon the contract. If you say for example are at journeyman pay front end my area $20.50/hr and want to transfer to Starbucks you'll have to accept a 20% pay cut and accept $18/hr. If it's vis versa then they'll max you out at your accrued pay steps earned and match pay. The same goes if you move to another area you fall into the contract assigned to that county.

Deli, Starbucks, Bakery - all one contract. Different pay scale than other contracts. Generally lowest paid.

Meat, seafood - separate contract same union.

Front end (cashiers, c.c.'s, fes..), dairy, produce, receiving, book keeping, 4th manager, night crew, floral, haba, inventory... - grocery index contract.

Click list- non union different contract. Can not transfer to union positions. You can transfer but of one but you'll be loosing your seniority.

You can transfer to other stores the union has allocated with but you'll have to accept their contract which is a different set of rules and pay scale. Say for example if you transfer from Safeway to Bartell Drugs or Safeway and end up deciding to become a dr or nurse. So long as you're with the same union you'll be able to retain your seniority. Rates of pay might differ though.

That's all very interesting but it's not what the OP asked.
