Makes no sense

Ok, I work as a courtesy clerk and most of the day today we had no checkstand assignment sheet. So I decided to take an hour lunch from 12pm to 1pm (I work from 8:30-4:00), so i took an hour to treat myself to a nice lunch. Apparently I did 2 things "wrong:"

1. Failed to ask what time I should take my lunch

2. Took it upon myself to take an hour lunch instead of a 30 min lunch.

 

So I came back and got a chewing out from the PIC. apparently, customers were complaining that there were no carts,  they had to do their own service outs, there was a spill that sat on the floor untouched, no one to get liquor, baby formula, or ciggarettes, no one to take some perishables back and now they are bad,  checkersnhad to do price checks. In short it was chaotic. But I felt I deserved an hour lunch because I NEVER get an hour lunch. Its ALWAYS A half an hour. It gets annoying at times

So long as you're doing your job duties it's fine. What I don't get about this company is even when you do things by the book you still get chewed out for some small b.s. detail. I've worked for companies that know how to handle staff and kroger is one of the worst because they'll hire people right off the street and this is sort of a figure it out your self sort of job. The computer training is b.s. then they throw you into the fire without any coaching. When no c.c. is in the front end it is the responsibility of the pic/fes to cover the duties. Rather than turn a blind eye to them. 

Most of the time when a c.c. goes to lunch there's no one to cover so of course the store is going to go to c.r.ap. The pic also dropped the ball and should of known this info. So what the customers at your store are so stupid they need a c.c. to hold their hadn through the whole store? They need to pull their head out of their @$$. Our store calls produce to cover order outs when there is no c.c.

You can talk to the management about this. If they turn the table on you and say you're at fault f*u(ck you then that's wrong. You did things right. The only other thing I would have done is verbally tell everyone in the front end that you're at lunch. Over communication is good so they don't become an @$$ hole to you when you get back. You can also call the union and say I'm doing my job duties but still getting chewed out for taking my lunch. The union will call the store and ask what's going on. Don't hesitate just do it. I do it all the time. This b.s. is why I take my lunch outside so I can eat lunch in peace.

Well, to be honest you did do something "wrong" in a way. You should have asked does anyone know where the checkstand sheet is. And with lunch if it was super busy you could have taken your lunch 3˝ hours after your start time and taken a 35-40 min lunch in lieu of a whole hour. Was there enough help? Even if there wasnt they shouldnt have  chewed you out for that if you didnt do it all the time. 

They could have said,  Hey, you are not in trouble but we could have used your help. Next time please ask about the legnth of your lunch and what time you should go.

You need to ask a manager if you can take an hour lunch beforehand per our contract.

In the Atlanta division local 1996 contract, lunches are unpaid and taken by mutual consent meaning you have to work it out with the PIC.

In that contract you're only allowed two fifteen minute breaks if scheduled 7-10 hours. We usually combine them but not always.  Breaks are at least one hour after the shift starts but always scheduled to the "needs of the business" meaning the PIC decides when you break, NOT YOU.

Nothing will piss off the front end supervisor/manager faster than someone just disappearing on break.  We have a couple cashiers who try to fight the supervisors when told to go on break.  furious 

Front end isn't like other departments where people can just up and send themselves on break.

No one is qualified in the management ranks to lead.  None of them have had any formal education in management (leadership) so they resort to reactive comments and reminders of what you can't do on the job as the day goes by.

There is no "system" at Kroger because management isn't qualified to be there.  Their management jobs are an afterthought following a prior career failure.  In other words, their focus isn't/never was on being a great leader (manager).

We hired a few new individuals that constantly mouth off at customers and I can understand professionally standing up for your self in a customer first job... However they do not do it professionally and it's only a matter of time before they're fired.

 


 If your store has people not having anything to do. Someone should have got carts and someone should cleaned the spill. Gee wiz people it is not rocket since. If I was a manager I would have flipped out at customer service someone may have done this to me.

I mean I would have went wild. People not having anything to do and then leaving a spill untouched. I know these were Probably 2 different stores. But I am sure every store has someone who has nothing to do.

OP should have asked "what time do I take my lunch?" And go from there. Then they would.have said the time and for how long. As for the spill, someone should have gotten it. A spill that needs to be cleaned is EVERYONE'S responsibility REGARDLESS of position. If the motto is "YOU spot it, YOU got it, then it does NOT mean You spot it, call a courtesy clerk to clean it or call numerous times and if no one shows the situation will absolve itself by the spill drying up if its liquid."

 Your exactly right because I have went in (when I worked there) and spills were left from the night before. A stocker told me it was there when he got there. It was one of the nights we did not have a floor crew because for awhile we had trouble with the company who did the floors. But that really would piss me off for a spill to be left.

Oh those poor, spoiled babies, having to do their own groceries or find their own carts.
Meanwhile they're dropping used gloves in the parking lot, leaving carts in parking spaces, loudly dissing the store and its employees while waiting in line and getting pissed off that their favorite peanut butter is out of stock.

I still remember shortly after I started, I asked to watch a couple of the videos again, and I got asked "Why?" by my FES and the manager-on-duty.
Granted, my manager was a b!tch, but still...I mean, wouldn't it be best for me to have watched them again if requested?
Why are you not thinking smart? Sure I'm not going to become a mechanic watching YouTube videos on how to change the oil in my car, but at least I'll have a better idea how to do it without killing myself or setting the whole damn thing on fire somehow.

Another thing OP could have done is check the posted schedule for that given day. If there was enough coverage for that day when he wanted to go take an hour lunch, then there should have been no problem. But if there was only one other person, that's where the problem lays. One person covering everything when it is totally bananas in the store is difficult.
