It would depend on the place and/or situation. If I'm done with my shift or on a day off, it's my time. I'm going to sit down and enjoy my meal. If I just clocked out for lunch and I don't want anything from the deli, I hit the drive-thru. Either way I don't worry if I see management there. If they say hi to me I say hi back. If they don't then oh well.
If management sees me in a resteraunt and I see him, so what? He says hi and I say hi and I go about my business.
Exactly! No problem...... We, as a free country, can still go out and eat anywhere we want to (well except for some measures because of the pandemic right now,but you get the idea). I have run into managers and co-workers at other places of business occasionally .........it's called ordinary real life in America. No need to feel embarrassed or awkward at all.

Would it be awkward if you and your manager walked out of adjoining restroom stalls after each of you had just taken a big stinky dump.
One time I was shopping and Giant Eagle and I saw my manager there. He looked like he didn't want me to see him, so I waved and made sure he knew I did. Anyway it's not a big deal.
