Are the other stores also getting "add outs" of UNWANTED, Half-rotten JACKFRUIT????? We have been getting them in about every other day, or three, and most of them just sit and rot, and attract fruit flies, and then we scan them out and pitch them!
Sad!! At 1.49 a pound, just one average jackfruit will cost 20 dollars or more. Very few people will pay that much for one.
Funny, but we've had this guy harassing us over the phone asking when we're gonna get some in...He came in the other day and bought THREE of them! I was curious so I asked him what he used it for and he said his family just eats it straight...I've heard of people using it for cooking for say, making a vegetarian version of pulled pork, too, but that's a lot of jackfruit to be eating it straight...Maybe someone can clue me in more on that...
I've also noticed new arrivals of prickly pears, kumquats, goldenberries and rambutans...If you've ever seen a rambutan, now that's an interesting fruit!
Edit: A further look into jackfruit and it seems like it might just save the world, according to this article...

First time I ever saw a jackfruit was this morning. I thought: what the heck is that? 2nd thought: How would anyone eat that whole thing?
Prickly pears grow wild in San Antonio, Texas. When I was a teen working in a restaurant, one of the cooks would add it to scrambled eggs. It wasn't terrible. Had a similar texture to fried okra. I don't see okra here in Michigan. Kroger sells cactus in a jar in the canned veggie aisle next to Hominy on the bottom shelf.

I don't understand why the stores sell it. No person is going to purchase a whole one, whole they are expensive and I would guess too much to eat. If anything, I would suggest to cut them into slices and wrap them and hope people might buy them. In reality, unless you sample (which isn't happening right not), no one is going to have a clue what it is.
I tried the pulled pork jackfruit substitute and I really didn't like it. It tasted kind of like soggy banana peels. I like a lot of meat substitutes but that one was gross.
