What is Kroger's policy regarding retuning from work after an extended leave?

An employee who works in the same department I currently work in took an extended leave in May because he had to have surgery on his knee due to his injuring it while at work. Now he wants to return to work. What is Kroger's policy regarding any employee returning to work after an extended leave?

As long as they have no restrictions and their leave was approved they just return to work

If he is regarded as a good employee, he can come right back, whatever, please hurry.

If he is regarded as a poor employee, any kind of doctor's note will be lost and he will be fired.  The union will not even pick up the phone.

Ah, Kroger.
