i got a packet in the mail for my short term disability leave, and i read that you must first use all but five of your paid days off (unless i misunderstood) before receiving payment
has anyone gone thru this before who can shed light on this for me?
i'm having hernia repair and the doctor says i should be out for two weeks. if i'm not getting paid STD pay since i have unused vacation days, guess what?
i'm scheduling my vacation the week before surgery so i can get fully paid STD pay. do i get paid the whole amount or some?
the way i see it is 1) i hurry up and use all but five of my paid days off and get full amount std pay or 2) i use a week of vacation beginning surgery date and only get another week paid STD
am i missing something
please help and i'll check back soon
also how do i keep my insurance from being turned off
You should probably use you PTO before going into surgery. As long as you have a note from your doctor then they shouldn't be able to fire you and you've explained well ahead of time what is going to be happening. It also depends on how well your bosses like you. I wasn't able to go into work for almost a month and because my bosses liked me (more than I thought they did) it was swept under the rug and never brought up.
In any case, as long as you have a doctors note for when you come back there isn't a whole lot they can do. Make every effort you let them know what is happening.

well i called metlife again for kroger and i learned that you dont actually get any pay for the first week ur off. so i suppose i will use a week of vacation/personal days then instead of the week before my surgery. im calling my division hr for clarification on the part that says i have to use all but five days of my paid leave first
