When I worked at Kroger if two people were in a line they would open another register, and if the Que-Vision said two needed open when they didn't, someone would sign into a register and not use it.
Well recently, several times actually, my old store would have only one register open, lines backed up and only self checkout as the only other check out option. Que Vision would say 2 or more registers needed open but they would do nothing about it. This going on because of staff shortages I guess?
Probably. Just the other day, we had 2 registers open, lines going down ALL the way to the VERY END. We had no one else but placate customers, we went through "the motions." It got so bad that we actually got on the voycall and said "Anybody with ANY experience checking please come up front." Nobody came until our nighttime PIC came off his lunch.
someone would sign into a register and not use it.
I always loved when they did that. It was one way to fool the system.

Being as we are becoming "re-obsessed" with checker speed, one of our checkers found out that if he logs out in between customers and then relogs back in, it resets his speed and 'fools the system' and he can keep his speed up to where it should be.
This does not work if it is super busy though. What he does is if its mildly busy, and he is told to stay open and at his register, he will log off and then relog back in.
