Today, one of my co-workers got called into the office 5 min to the end of his shift, and I was called in as well. Turns out my co-workernwas being fired and I was called in as a witness. He was allowed to work almost his entire shift before being fired and he had NO IDEA it was happening to him.
I find this odd that rather than hit him BEFORE he even clocks in, they wait until his shift is almost done before canning him. I think this is wrong and goes against policy...but I dont know if there is anything he can do.

Did they say why he was fired? Did he do something against the rules today?
Probably shorthanded and needed every body they could get. Firing him at the beginning at the shift would leave another hole to fill.
Kroger has been known to do this before. But I would just like to know the reason. The OP better watch out they called him in and it may be a trick because they may know he he tries to help the person fired he better watch out it could be a trick and they fire him also.
As far as firing him before he punches in goes, you can't be fired unless you're on the clock. Keep that in mind next time someone tries to fire you over the phone.
Was there a union steward present? If not, then he should contact them now unless he was still on probation.
Unless he was still on probation, they have to give a reason for why he was being fired.
To anyone who is ever called into the manager's office for disciplinary action, do not go unless your union steward is there. Think of it as being under arrest. Don't say anything without your attorney.
