The winter storm that's been going on passed through my area. We had a lot of call-ins and had to shut down early as a result. Other retail places were already closed and our store might be closed today as well. I live in the country and was lucky to make it home. I made sure to let both management and the FES know that I wouldn't be coming into work today should the store be open. I talked to a few employees in the other departments and they said that they would be staying home, too. I hope that everyone else on this forum were able to make it through this and please stay warm and be careful if you have to in today.

You made the right move. I worked in retail for a lotta years and the protocol then was stores like to NEVER closed, no matter how crazy the weather got. This was because customers with sht for brains would come out in the middle of blizzards, and corp. would see nothing but the profits. So we had to stay open.
I say if you're dumb enough to risk your safety like that, you deserve to get all the way over there and find the joint dark and locked up

OP here. I also heard that the store would open an hour later today. I called to make sure I was covered and sure enough it was. And oh yes, customers are still stupid enough to come in.
At my store I heard that everybody in the pharmacy called in. Only one person in Click List showed up. Deli didn't have anybody to wait on the counter. Of course this was early in the morning. Things might change later.

That's bad. People can live without bread and milk and Ding Dongs for a coupla days, but a LOTTA people need med refils and aren't prepped for a total black out like this
I went out today to see how the roads were. The snow melted some where I live but the main highways were clear. Drove by the store I work at and the parking lot was still covered. I could only ask why.

Blame the property owner. Stores are responsible for the sidewalks in front of their stores but the parking lot is the property owner's responsibility.
The property conditions depends on the ownership. In 50% of the stores the company have a land lease and any improvements (building, sidewalks, etc.) are company owned (company responsibility). Part of that lease is for usage of common area (parking lot, etc), so that is the landlords responsibility. Also, if the company does own the land, building the parking lot and common areas are normally controlled by a property management company.
Also, the stores in most instances can't close because of people basic needs. While the services might be limited, the store still needs to be open to fulfill the obligations a grocery retailer has for the community and population. Would you say a hospital is allowed to close in bad weather? Also, I would think there is some contractional language due to SNAP/WIC to be opened, unless without power, water, etc. Hell, most stores during a snow storm (during, not before), can run on 5 people during the day, 1-2 people on the front end and the others through the store (no service counters open).
Went into work today. Opening shift. Lot was still covered. Went out for my first lot hour. Saw a John Deere Bobcat clearing out the snow and (mostly) ice. Sometime later a huge plow truck comes in to help. Finally!
