Talking to employees as a customer
Permalink

Hi, so I don't actually work at Kroger but I am a customer and would like to ask for some input on etiquette from an employee's standpoint. There is an employee I see at my local Kroger occasionally, and I think he's cute/would like to talk to him more but I don't want to put him on the spot or annoy him at work. I also realize that this could be extremely awkward in so.many.ways. Is there a good way to approach this situation or is this something I should just let go of? I feel silly for even asking this, and I'm sorry if this is completely off-topic for this forum-- just tell me to eff off if it is. Thank you c:

Kroger has little or no official "etiquette". The managers just want all employees to be friendly and courteous to all customers if possible.

So, in your case, just do what the average girl would do in any other situation when interested in a guy.  Pretend to be interested in something pertaining to him -  in this case having to do with his job, and ask questions (such as "is this type of apple really sweet? Or would it make a good apple pie?"  "Is it OK to eat the inside part of the avocado that has started turning brown??" or "you sure do a great job --- always working so hard. Is Kroger a good place to work? ")

But don't be a bother, just show him that you enjoy talking to him.  Another point: you would need to shop a number of different times and make sure you talk to him each time (if possible) until he recognizes you and knows you apart from the thousands of other customers.  Even a very attractive girl can sorta blend into the crowd if your store is extremely busy. He may talk to hundreds of people in one shift.

Once he knows you from repeated conversations, and you keep showing that you want to talk to him, if he has any intelligence at all, he will get the vibe that you like him.    However, don't get your hopes up too high. He may already have a serious girlfriend or spouse, and not be interested.

Thank you for the detailed response kind stranger. I will definitely follow your advice and try to interact more frequently with him. I'm just awkward enough trying to strike up conversations in normal circumstances, so doing this while someone is at work is quite intimidating. I think it's the uncertainty of it all, and it is definitely possible that he is already in a relationship. There is no harm in trying though. Thank you again!

No, I think the OP was actually serious. (Yeah there are a ton of trolls that bombard this site (like you) but you can't get so paranoid that you think EVERY post is one!).  But, it makes no difference whether or not the OP is a troll,  I think I gave some sensible advice.  So there.

I was so confused about the trolling comment, I actually was not trolling at all and I'm not sure what I said to make them think I was. I very much appreciate the advice you gave me because it was sensible and straightforward. Thank you again.

And you probably go through the world with your tits 90% hanging out, looking like a walking 'COME FK ME!' sign. And men tend to get drawn into that, of all ages, and it's not our fault when you're on purpose teasing our c ocks.

It's as simple as that.

Thank you for your input, I value your take on this. As a woman, I understand that, and that's why I wanted opinions on this in the first place. I really don't want to make anyone feel uncomfortable at their work place. However, we seem to have a different stance on what "hitting on" means. I was literally just saying I wanted to talk to him more and I really don't consider that hitting on someone if I'm only trying to get to know them.

I wasn't talking about asking him out or getting his phone number. I personally cannot judge whether I want to even be friends with someone simply based on looks because personality is just as important to me. At the same time, I can't lie and say I'm not attracted to him in some way, whether that is friends or whatever else.

Don't worry, you didn't do anything. While there is a lot of helpful advice that goes on in this forum, there are also several lurking trolls that like attention and try to derail any meaningful discussion. Ignore them, your fine!
