The culture has definitely shifted from 'this company is my life and I'll work here til I die' to 'yknow what? I got one time only to live, and Ima get out soons I can and enjoy what good time I have left.'
I'm definitely in that second category. I worked for a few yrs at ADM and was surrounded by guys like who you described; they'd put in 45 yrs, leave, and be dead of something less than a year later. Fk that. You done pissed your whole life away, and for what?
For me the goal is to not necessarilly fully retire, but be able to. I have a rock band that makes pretty good money, and it's so much fun I don't even call it a job. I recommend everyone come up with a similar back up plan.
A friend of mine dies after working at Kroger for 40 years. He was diagnosed
with stage 4 colon and liver cancer and within a week he was dead!!! He was planning to retire in 3 years,
working for Kroger sucks!!! Ive been with Kroger for 38 years, maybe I should retire early if
thats possible, and get into another line of work. He was sick for the last 5-6 years and always
going to the doctor. Why would it take them so long to diagnose him when he was knocking at deaths door.
The last time I saw him at work he looked like he had one foot in the grave!!! Just sad, sad, sad!!!
Working at Kroger will kill you get out as soon as you can!!!
Kroger didn't give the guy cancer. However, I think his family should be sueing that doctor for not diagnosing the disease sooner. There's no excuse for that.

He never said Kroger gave him cancer. His point was, anyone can go any time from anything, so don't waste all your good years slaving away on a miserable job.
