I can't tell you how many times every holiday I hear this damn phrase.
1. Why are you even supporting stores open on a holiday?
2. This is incredibly disrespectful to say to someone working a holiday. And
3. Many stores have holidays as volunteer shifts not forced shifts. With the exception of those <2 yrs seniority where they sort of get last pick on the schedule.

Please stop saying "I'm so sorry you have to work the holiday." This is incredibly disrespectful to say. Not to mention it makes you sound like an aff hole.

nd some dont even have a choice. We're scheduled

Believe me, if I had a choice I wouldnt work holidays.

Take Christmas, I did not sign up to volunteer to work as it was strictly voluntary; they scheduled me anyway and I did a no call-no show.

Next time a customer says this to you, leave a package of weiners in the dairy department. It'll make you feel better.

I posted this on grocery stores reddit and about 25 people agreed with my post.

Whoever does the scheduling decides. Union can't be bothered and anyway the contract probably says nothing about this. Sorry but it is unrealistic to expect kroger to be any better than they are. As for customers, just smile and say, "Someone has to do it." Be cheerful and positive while the bastard tries to argue with you about it. You may find some of your regulars actually come by just to say hi. Love them back. The day is coming (hopefully soon) when you see them no more.

I always replied 'we have to because of people just like you, who can't stay out of here for even one day.'

That is golden. You should have seen Walmart the day after Christmas.
