I never trust articles that only tell one side of the story. Yes, there are some empty shelves at Kroger, but other grocery stores have empty shelves too. I went to Meijer the other day and their out of stocks were worse than Kroger's, and I'm just talking about the grocery section. Also, when you see pictures of bare shelves like that, it makes you wonder when the picture was taken. Perhaps they were in the middle of a reset and all the product was in bascarts. Also, if there's a problem with the manufacturer, then that should affect all stores that carry that product, not just Kroger.

You do realize that the "makework" we have to do (defined as "
denoting an activity that serves mainly to keep someone busy and is of little value in itself")
is still WORK...If it's on the clock and they NEED it done, it's still WORK! If it's something you get paid for doing, it's STILL WORK! Whether it's conditioning shelves, doing required scans, or cleaning up everyone's mess whether it be a customer's trash, trampled-in dirt or a toppled pallet, it's STILL WORK! And a tip for those who don't know...Just because an item is NOT on the shelf does not mean a.) the employees are hiding the said item, b.) the employees are not stocking the said item or c.) the manager is not ordering the said item...It may just be (and it seems more often than not lately) that there is an issue in PROCURING the said item, for whatever reason, whether it be a supply chain issue or a weather issue, as regarding produce or some other issue like a recall or production issue (as in they can't make the items fast enough)...If you happen to notice that OTHER STORES are having the SAME PROBLEM getting that item in, then there is a problem with the ITEM and not the ones who stock it...Just sayin'...

No. The people making decisions need to recognize that their mandatory trivialities are taking their few competent employees away from performing actually-beneficial and necessary tasks.
Many of the handheld-related tasks are designed to help the store, but inplemented in ways that are extremely detrimental - but give the IMPRESSION that everything is going well. Rather than dictate inane processes, the company should recognize that the paper results they are creating are painting an inaccurate picture.
The focus should indeed be on hiring good and intelligent workers - and them giving them the leeway to perform their job(s) without mandating endless checks and box-ticking exercises second-guessing and undermining every halfway-intelligent worker.

I agree. I work Picklist dept,and how the h3ll are we supposed to keep our out of stocks low when the shelves are bare? Some customers do not want substitutes on their orders, and the ones that do, want a close match. Oftentimes there is not even a close match so we have to out of stock it. Scans can wait. How can you count what is not there on the shelves? Now we have tons of crap in the back expiring because no one puts it on the shelves. Or it gets lost in the mess in the back because we forget it's there and order more only to let it sit. It's ****ing annoying
