Ours was around 30 years ago. It was a Saturday night. I was a checker at the time. All I know is the robber pulled a gun on an employee and made him go to the office and tell the workers behind the counter to hand over the money that was in the safe. I don't remember the police being there (I'm sure they were though), but I do remember some corporate people coming in and doing an audit to determine how much was taken. It was over $100,000. The next day, Sunday, we didn't any extra money to make change. We only had what was left in the tills from the day before. We had to tell customers to make their checks out for the exact amount because we couldn't give them cash back. Back then it was rare for people to use credit or debit cards to pay for their groceries because all those transactions had to be done at the customer service desk. People either used cash or wrote checks.
I remember absolutely hating working in the 15 items or less cash only lane. They called it the Fast Lane but it was anything but. The majority of the time during a transaction was the actual passing back and forth of the money. People never had their money ready and some old person would have to get out their rubber coin purse to find the exact change down to the penny. Meanwhile, people in line would be looking at me like it was my fault. Luckily, I was able to transfer to another department soon after that because I was not cut out for customer service.
A few years back our booth clerk was held up and forced to hand over a cash drop.she was trying to deliver to the booth. The person came behind her and put the gun to her back. The police were called and she took time off to recoup. When she came back the assh0le asm made a "joke" of it. She got pissed and took them.to court because they made it feel like a joke. She won the case and when she returned to work, they kept finding anything and everything "wrong" with what she did. She quit this time and sued again. She won.
Just to see what would happen she reapplied only to find out she was marked "unrehirable."
The icing on the cake? It was found out the gun was fake.
The asm I believe was fired after that. Surprisingly.
