Department manager has no plans on learning how to manage anything. Department manager is treating the department like a college kid working with a group project with 2 favorite trouble maker. I get the short straw and get disrespected for bringing anything to the department attention.

Then stop bringing stuff to their attention.  You're not being paid to worry about stuff like that.  Just do your job and do it well.  If the department falls apart, then the blame falls squarely on the department manager's shoulders.  The problem is Kroger has driven away the experienced people who would normally move into a department head position when one became available.  People used to really fight over them and go to the union to see who had the most seniority and experience.  Now, they just hire people off the street and tell them, "Just do your scans and do what the Zebra tells you to do."

Why would he?  His pay is so low he qualifies for Section 8.  So do you.  The secret is that the waiting list is years long, and then you have to live there.

If Kroger wanted competent employees, they would hire, promote, and pay for it.

Shareholders refuse.

Working for Kroger isn't a real job at any point, including store level.

At that point, considering the hours and stress, it's wageslavery all over again.

I ran a department successfully for 2 yrs during a hiring freeze. When it opened for hiring I applied and got turned down for some dumb ass tween they hired off the street. They tanked the department I held afloat for 2 yrs without a manager (did their duties). Manager quitted "I didn't want to show favoritism." I've worked unions where it is required they offer promotions to the most senior people first before they hire some one in off the street. Not kroger.
